BILLBOARD DECONSTRUCTION
A2 Media Coursework
FORBIDDEN
PLANET
This is Forbidden Planets masthead. The positioning of the masthead
is very effective because it is nearly in the centre of the page,
therefore gains the most attention. The fonts used are very bold and
clear, making it easier for the audience to see. The masthead adds
identity to the billboard, it’ important that you can see it because
without it, the viewers wouldn’t know the name of the brand.
Billboards need to declare facts straight away in a clear and, this is
why it has been
presented in this
format because it’s
easy concise format
to view from afar. Also the size of it, still makes it clear to view,
because some logos can become blurred and pixelated if they are too
big.
This is the dominant image from
the billboard. As you can see its an
image of a fictional character, which
directly relates to the genre of the
brand. The image is quite quirky
and looks very supernatural, which
will indefinitely draw attention to
the billboard because it’s not the
usual image that will see on a
billboard, therefore, making it stand
out from the crowd. The all black
figurine is in contrast to the rest of
the billboard, with the rest of the
page being a mixture between
black, red and grey text, the black
images stands out the most,
gaining the most attention.
Here is a list that is situated to the right of the billboard.
The list is a basic overview of what the store sells and the
genre of products that it covers. The use of this text is to
inform the audience of what the store is about by stating it
in this way. This format of communicating and displaying
the text is a generic convention of billboards, it enables the
billboard to get its point across quite quickly by being blunt
and to the point. Even though I like the way they have
structured the text and how it will effect the reader, I believe
the text should be a different colour. They grey colour
clashes with the white background and makes it harder to
see. It seems as though the text as been edited with the
transparent tool, in order to make it less bold. However, it
has made it harder to see and quite blurry. In order for it to
become easier to visualise the tone of grey needs to be
altered, in order for it to be bolder for the audience.
This essential information is vital for the billboard to be successful. Without the contact
information the audience will not be able to follow up their investigations and visits to
the store, without having this. I feel as though it could be slightly bigger, in order for it
to be more visible, however, the black bold font improves the visibility by brightening it
up. The use of the capital letters help to identify the main segments in the sentence,
helping to direct the audience to the store, literally.
This sell line on the billboard is incorporated in order to make the audience more
intrigued. By putting it in a bright red font it automatically draws the audiecne in
because no other text is in red, which suggests this is more important. The language
and register used is very blunt yet to the point, which is what you need in order to have
a successful billboard. Due to it being new it probably needs customers therefore, they
have incorporated this into the billboard, so that the audience know its modern and
new, which will hopefully add to the fact that they will visit.
THE MAG
Here is the information are which is situated at the top of the
billboard. Just like the rest of the text on the billboard, it is very bold,
which could suggest that everything and everyone is important to
this brand/company. The vital information they provide to the
audience will give them the follow up information they need to then
watch it. The white text contrasts very well with the black
background, enabling it to stand out even more.
Below is a screen shot of the background image. The image of St. James
park suggests that the billboard is situated in the North East but also that
it is very patriotic and proud to be a Geordie. The black stripes give the
background that extra dimension, by breaking the page up a bit more. The
black stripes enable parts of the billboard to become more clear, like the
white text. The image really makes the billboard stand out and become
that bit more eye catching. This billboard is quite different compared to
some billboard because most of them have one large dominant image to
the side of thee text, where as this one has the image on the background.
I believe that it makes the billboard more noticeable and unique, due to it
not following the trend. The idea of being unique could suggest that
Newcastle is a one and only and you can never be like it.
The white bold text within this screenshot showcases the essential information, in
order for the audience to follow up on, after seeing the billboard. Without this, the
billboard wouldn’t be successful because the audience would have no way or format
of connecting with the advert after seeing it. The capital letters used on the text help
to highlight the most important parts of the text. Although it is all very bold, the
‘venue’ text
should be in the same fonts and colour, because it looks as
though it’s blended into the background, making it quite hard to
visualise.
I have taken a screenshot of the main part of the text, the heading. The
font used is quite quirky, the fact that the ‘P’ and the ‘H’ is running off the
page makes it look different and eye catching, also it draws the audiences
attention to the centre of the billboard. The black text with the white
outline helps to bring all of the elements of the page together. It backs up
and confirms the fact that Newcastle is the sole focus of the billboard. The
blue and quite large text to the right of the Newcastle text is very eye
catching and takes a lot of attention away from other elements of the
billboard. This could signify the ideology and hopes for the church. The
blue tone compliments the billboard very well, contrasting with the darker
tones to liven the page up more.
VOGUE
Here is the dominant image that is located towards the left of
the billboard. The models facial expression is very jolly and looks
somewhat pleased. This idea of being happy and proud will
automatically effect the audience and make them more positive.
This would then effect whether or not they would attend the
event or read the magazine. The metallic colour scheme on the
clothes that the model is wearing, contrasts well with the
background’s pale tones. The tones used within the whole
image compliment the rest of the billboard and relate to the
colour scheme used for the text and background. The image
matches and fits in well because if it was to be too bold it would
take a lot of attention away from he rest of the billboard,
making it look quite awkward. The happy expressions on the
models faces could indicate and suggest that the brand and
event is very positive and covers happy and proud articles in
their magazine.
To the left is a small screenshot of a
list that is situated in the upper
right corner of the billboard. The
text is in a white colour tone
which clashes with the background
colour. In order for it to become
more effective I believe the colour should be
altered. However, the content of the text is very
effective to the reader because it states what the
billboard is advertising. This to the point and blunt
list gives the audience some extra information,
information that they need in order to make the
next move and visit the event. This is one of the
many conventions of a billboard, because lists help
get the point across quickly, giving audience more
information and details. Overall, without this list the
audience wouldn’t really have much information
about what the events about.
Here is the heading from the billboard. The inclusion of the brand
logo helps to give the billboard identity and creates a link to the
brand and their magazines and website. The font used is quite
classical, which could signify that the event could be showcasing
traditional art work and fashion. The elegant fonts sent off the
rest of the billboard, giving it that expensive feel, making the
audience become intrigued. The phrase below it – ‘A century of
style’ – gives the audience that feeling that the brand is very trust
worthy, due to it being around for so long.
Here is the essential information that is located at the bottom of the billboard.
The idea of the billboard and brand being sophisticated is reflected in this as it
showcases and uses elegant fonts that are bold enough to be seen. However,
enlarging the text would enable it to become easier to see, which all in all,
makes the viewing easier for the audience. I like the fact that a website address
has been provided, allowing the audience to get extra information. Also the
inclusion of a price appeals more to the audience because it is telling them
straight
what they need to pay, with it
being free, this draws them in
even more.

The masthead adds identity to the billboard, it’ important that you can see it because without it, the viewers wouldn’t know the name of the brand. Billboards need to declare facts straight away in a clear and, this is why it has been presented in this format because it’s easy concise format to view from afar. Also the size of it, still makes it clear to view, because some logos can become blurred and pixelated if they are too big. This is the dominant image from the billboard. As you can see its an image of a fictional character, which directly relates to the genre of the brand. The image is quite quirky and looks very supernatural, which will indefinitely draw attention to the billboard because it’s not the usual image that will see on a billboard, therefore, making it stand out from the crowd. The all black figurine is in contrast to the rest of the billboard, with the rest of the page being a mixture between black, red and grey text, the black images stands out the most, gaining the most attention. Here is a list that is situated to the right of the billboard. The list is a basic overview of what the store sells and the genre of products that it covers. The use of this text is to inform the audience of what the store is about by stating it in this way. This format of communicating and displaying the text is a generic convention of billboards, it enables the billboard to get its point across quite quickly by being blunt and to the point. Even though I like the way they have structured the text and how it will effect the reader, I believe the text should be a different colour. They grey colour clashes with the white background and makes it harder to see. It seems as though the text as been edited with the transparent tool, in order to make it less bold. However, it has made it harder to see and quite blurry. In order for it to become easier to visualise the tone of grey needs to be altered, in order for it to be bolder for the audience. This essential information is vital for the billboard to be successful. Without the contact information the audience will not be able to follow up their investigations and visits to the store, without having this. I feel as though it could be slightly bigger, in order for it to be more visible, however, the black bold font improves the visibility by brightening it up. The use of the capital letters help to identify the main segments in the sentence, helping to direct the audience to the store, literally. This sell line on the billboard is incorporated in order to make the audience more intrigued. By putting it in a bright red font it automatically draws the audiecne in because no other text is in red, which suggests this is more important. The language and register used is very blunt yet to the point, which is what you need in order to have a successful billboard. Due to it being new it probably needs customers therefore, they have incorporated this into the billboard, so that the audience know its modern and new, which will hopefully add to the fact that they will visit.
  • 5. Here is the information are which is situated at the top of the billboard. Just like the rest of the text on the billboard, it is very bold, which could suggest that everything and everyone is important to this brand/company. The vital information they provide to the audience will give them the follow up information they need to then watch it. The white text contrasts very well with the black background, enabling it to stand out even more. Below is a screen shot of the background image. The image of St. James park suggests that the billboard is situated in the North East but also that it is very patriotic and proud to be a Geordie. The black stripes give the background that extra dimension, by breaking the page up a bit more. The black stripes enable parts of the billboard to become more clear, like the white text. The image really makes the billboard stand out and become that bit more eye catching. This billboard is quite different compared to some billboard because most of them have one large dominant image to the side of thee text, where as this one has the image on the background. I believe that it makes the billboard more noticeable and unique, due to it not following the trend. The idea of being unique could suggest that Newcastle is a one and only and you can never be like it. The white bold text within this screenshot showcases the essential information, in order for the audience to follow up on, after seeing the billboard. Without this, the billboard wouldn’t be successful because the audience would have no way or format of connecting with the advert after seeing it. The capital letters used on the text help to highlight the most important parts of the text. Although it is all very bold, the ‘venue’ text should be in the same fonts and colour, because it looks as though it’s blended into the background, making it quite hard to visualise. I have taken a screenshot of the main part of the text, the heading. The font used is quite quirky, the fact that the ‘P’ and the ‘H’ is running off the page makes it look different and eye catching, also it draws the audiences attention to the centre of the billboard. The black text with the white outline helps to bring all of the elements of the page together. It backs up and confirms the fact that Newcastle is the sole focus of the billboard. The blue and quite large text to the right of the Newcastle text is very eye catching and takes a lot of attention away from other elements of the billboard. This could signify the ideology and hopes for the church. The blue tone compliments the billboard very well, contrasting with the darker tones to liven the page up more.
  • 7. Here is the dominant image that is located towards the left of the billboard. The models facial expression is very jolly and looks somewhat pleased. This idea of being happy and proud will automatically effect the audience and make them more positive. This would then effect whether or not they would attend the event or read the magazine. The metallic colour scheme on the clothes that the model is wearing, contrasts well with the background’s pale tones. The tones used within the whole image compliment the rest of the billboard and relate to the colour scheme used for the text and background. The image matches and fits in well because if it was to be too bold it would take a lot of attention away from he rest of the billboard, making it look quite awkward. The happy expressions on the models faces could indicate and suggest that the brand and event is very positive and covers happy and proud articles in their magazine. To the left is a small screenshot of a list that is situated in the upper right corner of the billboard. The text is in a white colour tone which clashes with the background colour. In order for it to become more effective I believe the colour should be altered. However, the content of the text is very effective to the reader because it states what the billboard is advertising. This to the point and blunt list gives the audience some extra information, information that they need in order to make the next move and visit the event. This is one of the many conventions of a billboard, because lists help get the point across quickly, giving audience more information and details. Overall, without this list the audience wouldn’t really have much information about what the events about. Here is the heading from the billboard. The inclusion of the brand logo helps to give the billboard identity and creates a link to the brand and their magazines and website. The font used is quite classical, which could signify that the event could be showcasing traditional art work and fashion. The elegant fonts sent off the rest of the billboard, giving it that expensive feel, making the audience become intrigued. The phrase below it – ‘A century of style’ – gives the audience that feeling that the brand is very trust worthy, due to it being around for so long. Here is the essential information that is located at the bottom of the billboard. The idea of the billboard and brand being sophisticated is reflected in this as it showcases and uses elegant fonts that are bold enough to be seen. However, enlarging the text would enable it to become easier to see, which all in all, makes the viewing easier for the audience. I like the fact that a website address has been provided, allowing the audience to get extra information. Also the inclusion of a price appeals more to the audience because it is telling them straight what they need to pay, with it being free, this draws them in even more.
