2. Plastic is a type of polymer which is
mainly produced by the petrochemicals.
That’s not all about it…
It is one of the cheapest and abundant
supply to man which has lead to
growth. growth.It is used for
numerous ways to
ease and beautify our
livings.
5. Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Estimates for the total area
range from 7,00,000 to
1,50,00,000 sq.km.
It is basically a floating
mass of mainly plastic.
It poses formidable threat to
marine life around the world.
8. 50% of plastic we use
we just use once and
throw away.
In the Los Angeles
area alone, 10 metric
tons of plastic
fragments—like
grocery bags, straws
and soda bottles—
are carried into the
Pacific Ocean every
day.
Plastic in the ocean
breaks down into such
small segments
that pieces of plastic
from a 1l bottle could
end up on every mile of
beach throughout the
world.
Annually approx. 500 billion plastic bags are
used worldwide. More than 1million bags are
used every minute.
Billions of
pounds of
plastic can be
found in
swirling
convergences
in the oceans
making up
about 40% of
the world’s
ocean
surfaces. 80%
of pollution
enters the
ocean from
the land.
44% of all
seabird
species, 22%
of cetaceans,
all sea turtle
species and a
growing list
of fish
species have
been
documented
with plastic in
or around
their bodies.
11. Thrown away: 35 billion
plastic bottles a year in
the US.
Over 40% of plastic
usage is in packaging.
Over 250 species are
known to have ingested
or become tangled in
plastic.
12. Bring your own re-usable shopping bags to the market.
Don’t buy bottled water- use a re-usable water bottle when you’re on the
go.
Bring your to-go mug with you to the coffee shop, smoothie shop or
restaurants that let you use them, which is a great way to reduce lids,
plastic cups and/or plastic-lined cups.
Recycle. If you must use plastic, try to choose #1 (PETE- Polyethylene
Terephthalate ) or #2 (HDPE- High Density Polythelene), which are the
most commonly recycled plastics. Avoid plastic bags and polystyrene
foam as both typically have very low recycling rates.
Spread the word. Talk to your family and friends about why it is
important to reduce plastic in our lives and the nasty impacts of plastic
pollution.
