Listing Faults
• Whenever solutions or ideas for
solutions are needed, it is because
a problem exists. If a problem
exists, it implies there is a fault in
the system.
• In seeking new ideas,
 1st step: Locate and determine the fault
 2nd step: Look for ways to rectify the
fault
• Use brainstorming technique to stir
up ideas.

• An analytical technique for
elucidating latent problems or

Osborn’s Checklist 1
1. Are there other ways of making use of the product,
its materials, properties, functions, principle, scrap or
rejects?
2. Are there other similar projects which are currently
being used or which have been used in the past?
3. Are there people/factors that can be substituted for
persons, parts, materials, processes or locations?
4. How about changing the idea, color, movement, sound
or shape?

NHK Method
• What is it?
 The NHK brainstorming method allows members to build ideas
through the sharing of ideas from another member.
• Procedure
 Define the problem.
 Each participant writes down five ideas on five separate cards.
 In groups of 5, while each person shares one idea from his card,
the others will create an idea out of his idea.
 The sequence continues around the table until there are many
ideas on the table.
 Collect and group the ideas into more meaningful categories.
 Select a couple of outstanding ideas to prototype and test.

What If?
• Procedure
 Select an idea / concept / existing product to apply the “What if”
Method.
 Facilitator leads the team to ideate out of the box by asking
questions based on “What if?” The rest will chip in with more
“what if” questions.
 Create as many ideas based on the questions.
 Analyze and prioritize.
 Select a couple of ideas to further develop and prototype.

being forced to follow
procedures which may be
irrational (difficult, illogical, or
lacking in purpose) because a
person believes that current
procedures are best and that
no other better ways exist.

How to Formulate an Innovative Idea
Locate a Problem
Investigate the Problem
Examine the Problem
Devise the Solution(s)
Consider its Feasibility
Fill out the Suggestion
Form
Submit the Suggestion
Are there any irrationalities?
(Find out exactly where)
What are the circumstances?
(Get the facts)
Why doesn’t it work?
(Find out the reason)
How could it be done more easily, quickly,
cheaply or accurately? (Think up ideas)
Is it feasible? Would it be effective?
(Work out the best method)
Decide on a final written version
(Explain the idea fully and clearly)
Put into practice all that is within your
capacity

What Are “Kaizen Eyes”?
• Kaizen is continual improvement for the better.
• "Kaizen Eyes" see opportunities to improve. These eyes
are a skill that can be developed through technique and
practice.
• The following slides are ways (techniques) to be
practiced. They will help to widen the ability to recognize
opportunity that may not be in full view.

If a problem exists, it implies there is a fault in the system. • In seeking new ideas,  1st step: Locate and determine the fault  2nd step: Look for ways to rectify the fault • Use brainstorming technique to stir up ideas.

Are there other ways of making use of the product, its materials, properties, functions, principle, scrap or rejects? 2. Are there other similar projects which are currently being used or which have been used in the past? 3. Are there people/factors that can be substituted for persons, parts, materials, processes or locations? 4. How about changing the idea, color, movement, sound or shape?

All rights reserved. 9 NHK Method • What is it?  The NHK brainstorming method allows members to build ideas through the sharing of ideas from another member. • Procedure  Define the problem.  Each participant writes down five ideas on five separate cards.  In groups of 5, while each person shares one idea from his card, the others will create an idea out of his idea.  The sequence continues around the table until there are many ideas on the table.  Collect and group the ideas into more meaningful categories.  Select a couple of outstanding ideas to prototype and test.

All rights reserved. 10 What If? • Procedure  Select an idea / concept / existing product to apply the “What if” Method.  Facilitator leads the team to ideate out of the box by asking questions based on “What if?” The rest will chip in with more “what if” questions.  Create as many ideas based on the questions.  Analyze and prioritize.  Select a couple of ideas to further develop and prototype.

Are there any papers or forms that seem to have no obvious purpose? 2. Is the difference between the busy and calm periods very noticeable? 3. Do the same errors occur? 4. Is it difficult to locate urgent items quickly? 5. Is there duplication of work? 6. Do circulars fail to reach their destination? 7. Are there superfluous forms?

Does leased property fail to get returned? 10. Do communal properties disappear? 11. Are procedures unclear? 12. Are there procedures that are too time-consuming and effort-wasting? 13. Are there matters that are easily forgotten or difficult to remember? 14. Are there so many points to observe that are inevitably overlooked?

All rights reserved. 17 “Forcedness” • “Forcedness” is the state of being forced to follow procedures which may be irrational (difficult, illogical, or lacking in purpose) because a person believes that current procedures are best and that no other better ways exist.

What (content, range) What is the purpose? Where (place, department in charge) Where is it most appropriate? When (period, date, time) When its it most effective? Who (person responsible) Who is most qualified? How (method, system) How can it be improved? How much (cost, labor) How much can we save on cost? How many (quantity, percentage) How many are appropriate?

All rights reserved. 19 How to Formulate an Innovative Idea Locate a Problem Investigate the Problem Examine the Problem Devise the Solution(s) Consider its Feasibility Fill out the Suggestion Form Submit the Suggestion Are there any irrationalities? (Find out exactly where) What are the circumstances? (Get the facts) Why doesn’t it work? (Find out the reason) How could it be done more easily, quickly, cheaply or accurately? (Think up ideas) Is it feasible? Would it be effective? (Work out the best method) Decide on a final written version (Explain the idea fully and clearly) Put into practice all that is within your capacity
