Two Principles of Social Justice
I. Each person has the most extensive basic liberties compatible with the liberties of
others.
II. Social and economic positions are to be to everyone's advantage and open to all.
Access to Higher Education in the US
Tennessee, Oregon & Minnesota have programs in place to offer free
community college, and a dozen more states have introduced legislation.

Access and Affordability in US Higher Education: A Social Justice Perspective on Free and Open

  • 2. Justice as Fairness “Justice is the first virtue of social institutions, as truth is of systems of thought.” John Rawls
  • 3. Two Principles of Social Justice I. Each person has the most extensive basic liberties compatible with the liberties of others. II. Social and economic positions are to be to everyone's advantage and open to all.
  • 4. Access to Higher Education in the US Tennessee, Oregon & Minnesota have programs in place to offer free community college, and a dozen more states have introduced legislation.
  • 5. Affordability of US Higher Education
  • 6. Global Open Education Movement Open Courses and MOOCs Open Educational Resources (OER) Open Degree Pathways Open Pedagogy Platforms tied to Open Content
  • 7. Why an Ethic of Openness? Who benefits from Open and how? Who and what should our priorities be for teaching and learning? Is the Open movement in danger of closing? What does Openness mean to you?
