LIGHTHOUSES
LIGHTHOUSES

Today we are looking at lighthouses. A lighthouse is a tower, building, or other type of structure designed to emit light
from a system of lamps and lenses or, in older times, from a fire, and used as an aid to navigation for pilots at sea or on
inland waterways.

Lighthouses are used to mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals and reefs, and safe entries to harbors, and can also
assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of
maintenance and replacement by modern electronic navigational aids.

In Scotland, the Northern Lighthouse Board look after lighthouses. They are responsible for the superintendence and
management of all lights, buoys and beacons within this area. The majority of these aids to navigation are provided by
harbour authorities and other local bodies under the supervision of NLB. However, most of the significant lighthouses
and other aids to navigation outside harbour limits are provided directly by the Northern Lighthouse Board.

Lighthouses ipr02

  • 2. LIGHTHOUSES Today we are looking at lighthouses. A lighthouse is a tower, building, or other type of structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses or, in older times, from a fire, and used as an aid to navigation for pilots at sea or on inland waterways. Lighthouses are used to mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals and reefs, and safe entries to harbors, and can also assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and replacement by modern electronic navigational aids. In Scotland, the Northern Lighthouse Board look after lighthouses. They are responsible for the superintendence and management of all lights, buoys and beacons within this area. The majority of these aids to navigation are provided by harbour authorities and other local bodies under the supervision of NLB. However, most of the significant lighthouses and other aids to navigation outside harbour limits are provided directly by the Northern Lighthouse Board.
