  5. 5. 5 This book on discipline of execution was written by a team of consultants from the Stephen Covey Consulting Management Team – a consulting firm that has become a business partner of hundreds of world- renowned companies assisting them in the process of implementing or executing their business strategies.
  6. 6. There are 4 key pillars for conducting Disciplines of Execution (often abbreviated as 4DX) 6
  7. 7. Discipline #1 : Focus on Wildly Important Goals (WIG) 7
  8. 8. Focus on your Wildly Important Goals (WIGs). Formulate WIG or Wildly Important goals that are super important for the progress of the team or business performance.
  9. 9. 9 A work team or department should only has 3 WIG, no more. Thus, the focus of the target is incredibly important or has the greatest impact on improving performance. Having too many goals will only make the work process less- focused.
  10. 10. 10 Some examples of WIG or Wildly Important Goals include: • Increasing net profit 2 times in the next 2 years • Increasing sales revenue 5 times in the next 3 years
  11. 11. 11 • Increasing customer satisfaction score to 99 (on a scale of 0 -100) in the next year • Growing employee engagement scores (employee engagement and commitment) by 50% in the next 12 months
  12. 12. Formulate your WIG Work Team in a Measurable and Specific Way 12
  13. 13. Formulate a WIG with a target that is challenging but also achievable based on the available resources
  14. 14. 14 Formulate a WIG with a specific and well-defined timeline 14
  15. 15. Discipline #2 : Work on the Lead Measures
  16. 16. 16 Lead measures (leading indicators) = a set of process indicators that will have a positive impact on the achievement of WIG.
  17. 17. 17 Lead measures = able to leverage or jump-start the company's business performance to an even greater level.
  18. 18. 18 For example, we have WIG = Increasing sales turnover 5 times in the next 3 years Then the examples of lead measures are as follows : - The number of customer leads increase by 50% - The amount of new product increase by 100%
  19. 19. 19 WIG = Increase customer satisfaction score Lead Measures: - The number of customer complaints decrease by 50% - Customer complaint resolution speed increase by 100% - The number of defective products (defect rate) decrease by 75%
  20. 20. 20 WIG = Increase body fitness and health Example of Lead Measures: - Increasing exercise frequency - Increasing the frequency of eating healthy (fruits and vegetables) - Practising an adequate sleep duration and quality
  21. 21. 21 Lead Measures focus on process indicators that will drive the achievement of WIG.
  22. 22. 22 Formulate the Lead Measures (or Leading Indicators) that have the most impact on the achievement of WIG
  23. 23. 23 Lead Measures should also be measurable, specific and its should have a well-defined timeline
  24. 24. Discipline #3: Performance Scoreboard
  25. 25. 25 The third discipline to perform the implementation or execution process effectively is to prepare a "performance scoreboard” which is easy to read, access and manage by every team.

  27. 27. 27 Having a clear Performance Scoreboard will help monitor the business strategy execution process.
  28. 28. 28 The Performance Scoreboard presents data on WIG achievements, trends in WIG achievements, and required actions to achieve WIG
  29. 29. 29 The Performance Scoreboard system should be in the form of a software application (not Excel) and user- friendly
  30. 30. Discipline #4 : Performance Accountability
  31. 31. 31 This discipline refers to the team leaders and members who are responsible for ensuring the achievement of WIG goals optimally.
  32. 32. 32 Manager or team leader has definite and clear accountability or responsibility to achieve performance targets that have been set (discipline of accountability).
  33. 33. 33 Performance accountability needs to be accompanied by high dedication and commitment to achieve the WIG targets that have been set.
  34. 34. 34 Performance accountability needs to be based on an attitude of finding SOLUTIONS, not an attitude of blaming other parties, when WIG is not achieved.
  35. 35. 35 Performance accountability also needs to be followed by an attitude of constantly improving the performance.
