Good morning fellow Toastmasters and guests. I am Hari. This speech should have happened long
back, but somehow things didn't materialize and finally I am here now, delivering my first prepared
speech and it feels great to 'break the ice' п Љ.
When I decided to give my first speech, a lot of things went inside my mind. I kept thinking on how
to present it. Shall I present it the non–linear way, as shown in films such as 'Curious case of
Benjamin Button' or the simple linear narration? Finally, I decided not to go overboard. The same
tried and tested template will work for the first speech.
A bit of intro...
I was born and brought up in Chennai. Completed my schooling in T.I. Matriculation School, part
of AMM foundation. Just as everyone, I relished my school days. After completing my schooling,
just as a typical Indian male, I chose to study Engineering. Engineer from St.Joseph's college of
Engineering. My college is one among the few colleges, which is well known for food and sports
more than academics. I had my own share of fun in such an austere college, by helping one of my
friends for love. How? My friend asked me to pass on his mobile to her and I am not good at such
things. I clearly invited the attention of the 'In charge', and he not just confiscated my friend's
mobile, but made us stand near the college gate for days together. Guess what? Romance continued

With all these truths, and the freedom to speak them, comes the question of who should hold the
power and ability to speak their minds. In the United States, our society believes everyone should
have the right to freedom of speech, to voice thoughts and opinions. Written down in the
constitution is the promise to citizen rights, to all peoples who want to exercise those rights. "It
was we the people; not we, the white male citizens," who built up our nation and society, and the
promise to freedom of speech (Anthony, par. 4). Women, children, teens, those of color should all
be able to speak freely, to give shape to the opinions they hold like all the empowered men that
speak freely. Not all governments and nations feel the same about this. In Singapore, they have their
"own standards of social order as reflected in [their] laws" (Reyes, par. 3). Different nations feel
differently about human rights and laws as presented by the United States, including freedom of
speech, whether it is safe for everyone to speak their minds or just best to keep it to those who are
fed lies from those of a higher position.
With freedom of speech can come violence, a common reason for nations and governments to deny
this right. Some societies, such as Singapore, agree that by enforcing certain laws that abide the
government keep said nation "orderly and relatively crime–free" (Reyes, par. 3). Freedom of speech

The Power of Speech Speech is a powerful tool, if used correctly. Speech can do many things, but
there are two main things that speech is the best at. It can create and embellish as it pleases.
Well–spoken words can also twist the truth and manipulate. Richard the Third is an excellent
example of both these attributes. Richard uses the power of speech to gain what he wants. He
shows the success that this tool can bring if used carefully. Richard makes himself a saint, a
simple disabled innocent who is wronged by everyone. He also shows the failures it brings when
overconfidence and haste spoil it. He loses his charm as he no longer treads carefully and simply
drives his way through conversations. Richard is a good example of the power of speech as he
uses his persuasion to accomplish his goals. From the very beginning, Richard is shown as being
a highly persuasive individual. He is very careful to show himself as one who only speaks sweet

When it comes to giving speeches, such as the one that the late Steve Jobs gave at Stanford
University, the speaker must grab the attention of the audience. The best way to grab the attention
of the audience is by using ethos, pathos and logos. Jobs used all of these in his Commencement

You may be asking, which mindset do I have? That's a vital question because you've seen the power
of your mindset in your whole life.
It's now clear to you more than ever before that while your mindset is created for you, you're the
one responsible for developing it into what you want it to be.
Debbie Millman, a motivational speaker on the topic of mindset, stated in one of her speeches: "If

The midpoint of the semester arrived in parallel to the time we presented our informative speeches. I
have learned a lot of information about improving my communication skills since the first day of
class. So, with that being said there was many things about this that speech that I think I improved
on since the first speech. On the other hand, we were only halfway through the semester when I
presented this speech so there are still many things I hope to improve on. Reflecting on these two
facets will hopefully contribute to the advancement of my public speaking skills.
There were many aspects of my speech I feel I have improved on or just did well on overall. For one,
my eye contact. In my first speech my eye contact was ok consistency–wise. However, it did not
extend to the whole audience range. While presenting my informative speech I remembered this
struggle from my introduction speech. With this in mind I actively reminded myself to scan the
whole class room, not just the middle. As for the eye contact consistency for this speech I also
felt I did a decent job. I would say my eye contact to looking at notes ratio was at least an 8:2. I
owe this to practicing. If I had not have practiced I would have needed to look at my notes a lot
more. Hopefully I can eventually get this ration up to the perfect 9:1 I was aiming for. Bearing this
in mind, I hope I will utilize this insight and remember to practice for my upcoming speeches.

Luckily, I was able to perform my entire speech around five to six minutes which was a goal I had
struggled to obtain in practice. To hasten my speech, I had to talk a lot faster and remove a lot of

My Self-Evaluation Of Speech
This paper will discuss mine self–evaluation and do into detail about my first speech. My first
speech takes place in front of my class and I have to tell a story of an experience that has
happened to me. Telling a speech was a new experience for me and I embrace the challenge. A
speech can have an impact on a person life and the audience can also relate a topic that is being
presented. I will explore and go into the details of ethos, pathos and logos of my speech for my
personal assessment. I think I did a good job presenting my ethos through my speech story. I
convince my audience with my credibility through my speech and the way how talk throughout
the speech. For example, throughout my whole speech, I shown my hands and did not hide my
hands. By keeping my hands in plain view, it shows my audience nonverbally that I can be
trusted. The volume of my voice was at a normal speaking tone and was not too low. Most of my
audience was able to hear me and listen to me very clearly. I also presented myself with
confidence and gave off the impression that I was prepared. For example, I had a smile and had
constant eye contact with my audience throughout my speech. There was certain things that I was
doing that was ineffective while I was talking. Throughout my speech, I kept saying um and was
pausing at times. I did not realize how much I was saying and doing these actions. These actions are

giving the audience the objective for the speech. Now that the speaker has figured out what type of

In this outline the speaker might use question for the main points and later use sentences for the
preparation outline. After the working outline is complete the speaker is ready to conduct research.
When researching the speaker wants to find material the will make the audience want to listen and
learn. The speaker should select material that have a language level appropriate, something that will
interest the audience, and if the topic is complex make sure to find multiple perspectives and means
because everyone learns differently. The speaker should use the internet, library, newspapers,
magazines, and personal knowledge in order to create their speech. Now that the speaker knows the
topic it is time for them to construct the informative outline. This outline is structured and includes
complete sentences and will typically end with a source page. When making the outline a speaker
needs to know how to organize the body of an informative speech. first the speaker needs to

Preparation Reflection The best way to prepare for a presentation, one must consider the best
method, the type of presentation and the audience for a given topic. There are four different types of
presentation methods they are; Impromptu, Extemporaneous Speaking, Using a Manuscript, and
Memorization. Each of the four methods is appropriate in certain situations. Impromptu is a speech
that frequently involves no preparation time and forces you to think on your feet. With no
opportunity to prepare, you must rely on what you know. Extemporaneous is a speech that involves

An explanatory speech might give a description of the state of a given topic. The speaker might use
visual representation of the particular data or statistics. A demonstration speech explains how to do
something. Visualization is the key, on how–to speeches using visual examples that show the
audience how to move from step to step through a particular activity. Audience analysis is a task
that is often performed by technical writers in a project's early stages. It consists of assessing the
audience to make sure the information provided to them is at the appropriate level. Understanding
our audience is one of the most important elements of effective communication. Considering your
audience when creating a presentation can help you tailor your content to give them specifically
what they want, need, and expect. By doing this you are able to deliver a presentation that
engages, informs and persuades. One of the most important parts of your speech is to involve your
audience. We should view our audience as collaborators. Keeping your audience in mind while you
write can help you make good decisions about what material to include, how to organize your ideas,
and how best to support your argument. Speech preparation is the most important element to a
successful presentation, and also the best way to reduce nervousness and combat fear. Some of the

Speech Reflection Essay
During speech class this semester, I gave several different types of speeches on several different
topics. During this semester, my ability to give speeches in front of an audience has improved quite
a bit, I hope. Going into the semester, I had a really hard time giving speeches to people, but now that
speech is almost over I feel like I am more capable of doing so. I think the thing I did best during
the semester was getting good information for each of my speeches. My favorite assignment was
most likely the impromptu speech. I really liked that one because we did not have to prepare an
outline or anything like that, we just got to go up there and speak. During this semester, I learned
a lot about how to give speeches such as the proper way to stand so I do not rock, or how to use
my hands to emphasize my points. In the future, I think that I will be able to control my speed better
during my speeches which will help the people I am presenting to understand my message. I
think the skills I have acquired during speech will help me for the rest of my life. No matter what
career I choose, I am sure that at some point I will have to present to someone about something.
The skills I learned in speech will also help me just communicate with people in a one on one
situation easier than I do now. I can use these skills throughout the rest of high school and through
my six years of college still to come because whenever I have to present a project I will know how to
effectively communicate my message to my audience.
Based off of all of my reflection sheets, video evaluations, and peer critiques I have improved over
the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester I had a problem with speed and using
to many "filler" words. As the year progressed, my speed became more and more controllable and
I used less and less filler words. After my most recent speech, I'm still not quite at the level I want
to be at, but I am far better than I was at the very beginning. I think just speaking in front of people
more than I am used to doing has helped me develop better speaking skills and grow in my ability to

Black Lives Matter Persuasive Speech
Some folks say and support "Black Lives" and others, "All Lives". As time go on, things take a
turn 'for the worse'. The 'turn for the worse' is due to the mindset of many people and the mass
media. With time should come justice, peace and common ground on what is happening, but what if
no one is supportive or have no knowledge of what is to come? The saying of "All Lives Matter" is
deleterious and ruinous to the "Black Lives Matter" movement and support and to the black
community by deteriorating their beliefs, livelihood, and mentality. Based on one's mentality, your
mind is the characteristic attitude of the way you think of a person or a group, given this knowledge,
your mentality and mindset sets together the things you say about anything, or in this case, towards
something. What you say about something is your freedom of speech in America, the first
amendment of the constitution, "or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right
of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances"
(Madison, 1789). This amendment has it's aspects where it helps out the fellow people of America
livelihood, but instead, people can be deleterious towards what they say to someone and is also
faced with hypocrisy.
You may ask, "How does this deal with saying "All Lives Matter" when someone else say "Black
Lives Matter", that's my opinion but what's bad about it"? What's bad about is how you say it, the
tone your voice is in and the choice of words you may also choose, depending on how you say
things, it differs and it can come off as a hate speech. "Free speech cannot be unlimited and is not in
any jurisdiction, even though some like to pretend it is. Every society sets certain legal limits
defined by knowledge of and respect for local customs, sensibilities and what is perceived, rightly or
wrongly, as existentialist threats" (В¶5, Kutty, 2016).
