2. COLOSSIANS 1:15-20
15 The Son is the image of the invisible
God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For
in Him all things were created: things in
heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,
whether thrones or powers or rulers or
authorities; all things have been created
through Him and for Him.
3. 17 He is before all things, and in
Him all things hold together. 18
And He is the head of the body, the
church; He is the beginning and
the firstborn from among the dead,
so that in everything He might
have the supremacy.
4. 19 For God was pleased to have all
His fullness dwell in Him. 20 And
through Him to reconcile to Himself
all things, whether things on earth or
things in heaven, by making peace
through His blood, shed on the cross.
5. INTRODUCTION
>The supremacy of the Lord Jesus
signifies His ultimate authority over
all things in His nature as God.
> Supreme defined as the highest
rank or authority, highest in degree or
quality.
6. I. Jesus is above all things
because…
1. He is the perfect image of the
invisible God.(v15a)
2. He is the firstborn over all
creation.(v15b)
> the term “firstborn” refers to a
position of authority.
7. I. Jesus is above all things
because…
3. Through Jesus, all things are
created.(v16)
4. He is before all things and the
beginning.(v17,v18)
5. He is the head of the body, the
church.(v18)
8. I. Jesus is above all things
because…
6. In Him dwells the glory and
fullness of the unseen God.(v19)
7. Through Him all things on
earth, in heaven were reconciled to
God the Father.(v20)
9. II. To what extent Jesus’
authority…
> Matthew 28:18…all authority in heaven
and earth has been given to Me.
> Matthew 11:27…all things have been
handed over to Me by my Father.
> John 3:35…the Father loves the Son
and has given all things into His hand.
10. We see the extent of Jesus’ authority
to rule…
1. In His act as the creator of all
things.(John 1:3)
2. In His sustaining the world.(Heb
1:3b, Col 1:17)
3. Not only sustaining the natural world
but governing all of nature.(Luke
8:22-25, Mt 10:29)
11. II. To what extent Jesus’ authority…
4. In His sovereignty over Satan and all his
demons.(Mk 1:27, I Jn 5:18b)
5. In His authority over all disease.(Exodus
4:11, Acts 10;38)
6. In His sovereignty over conversion.(Mk
10:23-27)
7. In His triumph over death, your
death.(Romans 8:35-37, I Cor 15:54-58)
