My Friends,
Every February we observe Black History month with a special moment
each Sunday in worship. I have never served a church which has done
this so faithfully and consistently, and I am proud of our church’s witness.
I have been asked a couple times why we are so committed to observing
it. I answer with a couple of points:
1. We are a diverse community, and we feel it is important that
people are able to share their experience and their history with one
another.
2. Recent history has proven to us that these are stories which must
be lifted up, to raise awareness that our nation is still coming to terms
with its racist past and the systems of racism which still exist in our
policies and in our economy.
3.
Pastor Joey Macdonald thought it was important and instituted
the tradition…we continue to feel his witness when these stories are told.
4.
We believe very simply that “All Means All” in the family of
God…no matter the color of your skin, and that in Christ, we all are
one.
I think these are all good reasons to continue to observe the month. Yet I
am also aware that there might be some other stories and experiences
that we should be sharing. So keep your eyes peeled this year as we start
to celebrate some of the other cultures and traditions and identities in
our congregation; and if we call and ask you to share, I hope that you
will say “Yes!”
As the culture around celebrates love and affection during this month,
may these moments of sharing and witness increase the love we have for
one another. We are one…even if we are not the same.
In Christ,
Pastor Steve

February 6 A Great Catch! Luke 5:1-11
Are we ever ready to follow Jesus? We often think that we need to get our lives together, clean ourselves, learn a
little more before we are ready to follow. Hear what Jesus has to say when Peter, surprised by a huge catch of fish,
tells Jesus to depart from him.
February 13 Poor and Blessed
Jesus, after healing a crowd of sick and troubled people, teaches his disciples that people are blessed when
they are poor, broken, oppressed, and cast-off. What did he mean by these words?
February 20 Jesus Economics Luke 6:27-38
Whether we want to talk about “trickle-down” economics or “voodoo economics,” Jesus wants to talk about the
economy of God’s Kingdom in a different way. According to Jesus, the Kingdom is for the generous and the
grace-filled. How does that compare to the world’s economy?
February 27 Between Realities Luke 9:28-36 (37-43)
Wherever Jesus is, heaven and earth are one realm. What might that mean for a community which claims that
Christ is its midst?

Sermon Series - “The Nature of Good News”
Have you ever stopped to consider what Jesus meant by “Good News”? Most Christians think the “Good News”
is about eternity in heaven and ignore the things Jesus spends more time talking about: equity, justice,
compassion, and mercy for the poor, the sick, the outcast and the forgotten.

BLACK HISTORY ALL YEAR ROUND
By Daniella Lake
To celebrate Black history all year round, Daniella Lake is a research apprentice for a brand new public
history research project at UC Berkeley called Black Lives at Cal (BLAC). The BLAC research team conducts
research related to Black history on campus and is in the process of creating an accessible and engaging
website that documents this information.
“Through this project, we are making our campus, one of the largest public universities in our state and one
of the most renowned public research institutions in the country, more inclusive by highlighting and sharing
the stories of Black students, faculty, and changemakers who made an impact in our school and beyond.
While the task of making such a large institution more inclusive can feel daunting, being a part of this project
has been my way to make the changes I want to see.” -Daniella Lake
Lenten Study – Thursday, March 3 at 7:00 PM
“The Lord’s Prayer: The Meaning and Power of the Prayer Jesus Taught” by Adam Hamilton
Most Christians know the Lord’s Prayer by heart. We pray it together as a part of our gathered
worship. We remember it as the prayer Jesus taught his disciples. But do we really understand and
appreciate the meaning and power of its words? Do we ever really stop to consider what we ask God
everytime we pray it?

Good News February 2022

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@gmail.com FEBRUARY 2022 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.org IN THIS ISSUE: • Black History Month • Souper Bowl Sunday • Tiny Homes Thank You • Cookies for NHIFP • Lenten Study My Friends, Every February we observe Black History month with a special moment each Sunday in worship. I have never served a church which has done this so faithfully and consistently, and I am proud of our church’s witness. I have been asked a couple times why we are so committed to observing it. I answer with a couple of points: 1. We are a diverse community, and we feel it is important that people are able to share their experience and their history with one another. 2. Recent history has proven to us that these are stories which must be lifted up, to raise awareness that our nation is still coming to terms with its racist past and the systems of racism which still exist in our policies and in our economy. 3. Pastor Joey Macdonald thought it was important and instituted the tradition…we continue to feel his witness when these stories are told. 4. We believe very simply that “All Means All” in the family of God…no matter the color of your skin, and that in Christ, we all are one. I think these are all good reasons to continue to observe the month. Yet I am also aware that there might be some other stories and experiences that we should be sharing. So keep your eyes peeled this year as we start to celebrate some of the other cultures and traditions and identities in our congregation; and if we call and ask you to share, I hope that you will say “Yes!” As the culture around celebrates love and affection during this month, may these moments of sharing and witness increase the love we have for one another. We are one…even if we are not the same. In Christ, Pastor Steve GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Rev. • 2. February 6 A Great Catch! Luke 5:1-11 Are we ever ready to follow Jesus? We often think that we need to get our lives together, clean ourselves, learn a little more before we are ready to follow. Hear what Jesus has to say when Peter, surprised by a huge catch of fish, tells Jesus to depart from him. February 13 Poor and Blessed Jesus, after healing a crowd of sick and troubled people, teaches his disciples that people are blessed when they are poor, broken, oppressed, and cast-off. What did he mean by these words? February 20 Jesus Economics Luke 6:27-38 Whether we want to talk about “trickle-down” economics or “voodoo economics,” Jesus wants to talk about the economy of God’s Kingdom in a different way. According to Jesus, the Kingdom is for the generous and the grace-filled. How does that compare to the world’s economy? February 27 Between Realities Luke 9:28-36 (37-43) Wherever Jesus is, heaven and earth are one realm. What might that mean for a community which claims that Christ is its midst? Most Christians think the “Good News” is about eternity in heaven and ignore the things Jesus spends more time talking about: equity, justice, compassion, and mercy for the poor, the sick, the outcast and the forgotten. BLACK HISTORY ALL YEAR ROUND By Daniella Lake To celebrate Black history all year round, Daniella Lake is a research apprentice for a brand new public history research project at UC Berkeley called Black Lives at Cal (BLAC). The BLAC research team conducts research related to Black history on campus and is in the process of creating an accessible and engaging website that documents this information. “Through this project, we are making our campus, one of the largest public universities in our state and one of the most renowned public research institutions in the country, more inclusive by highlighting and sharing the stories of Black students, faculty, and changemakers who made an impact in our school and beyond. While the task of making such a large institution more inclusive can feel daunting, being a part of this project has been my way to make the changes I want to see.” -Daniella Lake Lenten Study – Thursday, March 3 at 7:00 PM “The Lord’s Prayer: The Meaning and Power of the Prayer Jesus Taught” by Adam Hamilton Most Christians know the Lord’s Prayer by heart. We pray it together as a part of our gathered worship. We remember it as the prayer Jesus taught his disciples. But do we really understand and appreciate the meaning and power of its words? Do we ever really stop to consider what we ask God everytime we pray it?
