Wearable can not always rely on the cloud •  Performance – Many applications requires near-real- time processing – Local processing is required to minimize latency •  Connectivity – Need to operate in remote locations, including rural areas underground and in the sea •  Reliability – Safety & Healthcare applications require high availability – Can’t count on network & server availability •  Efficiency – Devices may generate hundreds of events every second, most are irrelevant for server processing – Transmitting this amount of data overloads the communication and the server •  Power consumption – Transmitting this amount of data drains the batteries •  Privacy – Part of the data needs to be securely handled and in some case obfuscated 29
