1. Online Education As Ecommerce
Presented By Shubham Tikkiwal & Nikhil Pareek (IIT Roorkee)
2. Problem That Business Addresses (India)
o Currently no solid platform to see college and faculty reviews given by genuine source. No details
information about what college has to offer. No tracking of information about colleges.
o Professors are forgotten into darken, no personal identity.
o No platform to share study material (not only slides) by students of different colleges.
o Even if we somehow finds the study material, we don’t know what to study.
o Books and research papers are not at all free to study but a entertaining song is!
o We all should have at least right to study the researches for free over internet for a open
environment of development
3. The Problem, continued
Online courses are available, but the real talent lies in the real working people. That real talent is
unable to reach to the students for learning.
Now-a-days, teachers can upload a video on youtube or any other site but it takes ages to find a
relevant course.
Teachers cannot reach everywhere in India. Even if they can, a good teacher will not prefer to teach
at remote places.
The word “Education” is made so broad so that no product or service is able to come up with a
solution that can bring all the necessary platform of education under one hat with a touch of social
site.
4. The Problem, still continued
No social platform for colleges, schools, universities, couching institute where they and their faculty
or teachers can have a direct interaction with students, even those of other institutes.
In the age of open source, even the prestigious institutes like IITs haven't made their study material
open source.
Right now, the whole system of education is a problem, sometimes due to government, sometimes
due to lack of transparency, and sometimes due to lack of innovation that a business so large is
untouched.
There are no barriers in education but still no solution exists.
5. What is Education?
The act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of
reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.
The act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge or skills, as for a profession.
A degree, level, or kind of schooling: a university education.
The result produced by instruction, training, or study: to show one's education.
The science or art of teaching; pedagogics.

6. How? Online or offline?
Online Education:
The nonexistence of a physical classroom, flexible schedules, and reduced personal
interactions.
Online education is a type of distance learning---taking courses without attending a brick-and-
mortar school or university. Instead, online students and teachers interact over the Internet.
7. What Is the Meaning of Online Education?
Online learning – Education in which instruction and content are delivered primarily over the
Internet. (Watson & Kalmon, 2005)
Used interchangeably with Virtual learning, Cyber learning, e-learning.
Virtual learning can take place synchronously or asynchronously.
In synchronous systems, participants meet in “real time”, and teachers conduct live classes in virtual
classrooms. Students can communicate through a microphone, chat rights, or by writing on the
board. In asynchronous learning, which is sometimes called “self-paced” learning, students are
expected to complete lessons and assignments independently through the system.
Asynchronous courses have deadlines just as synchronous courses do, but each student is learning
at his own pace.

9. Online ?
The phenomenal growth of online education is presenting uncharted challenges for academic
institutions.
A virtual learning environment can also include students and teachers “meeting” online through a
synchronous web-based application. The teacher is able to present lessons through video,
PowerPoint, or chatting. The students are able to talk with other students and the teacher, as well as
collaborate with each other, answer questions, or pose questions. They can use the tools available
through the application to virtually raise their hand, send messages, or answer questions on the
screen given by the teacher or student presenter.

Distance Learning
Home Schooling
Flipped learning
Blended Learning
Online public Education (K-12)
Online Secondary Education (college and university classes)
E-learning
M-learning
12. How? Blended….
Virtual learning environments are the basic components of contemporary
distance learning, but can also be integrated with a physical learning
environment which may be referred to as blended learning.
This is where students attend traditional school on a part-time basis and
complete their classes online
Blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns at
least in part through online delivery of content and instruction with some
element of student control over time, place, path or pace. While still attending
a “brick-and-mortar” school structure, face-to-face classroom methods are
combined with computer- mediated activities.
16. M - Learning
M-Learning is the way to learn the tools of communication involving mobile wireless, which creates
the premises of an area spreading messages on a global scale.
Mobile telephoning has evolved so much that now allows connections to computers and making
consistent data transfers.
M-Learning is a new educational paradigm that creates an environment in which pupils access to
course materials, instructions and applications anytime and anywhere.
17. Why?
Simple, Flexible Logistics: After location, time is the greatest limitation on learning. That goes for
both the instructors and the students, each of whom has to be both available and in alignment with
the other for face-to-face instruction. By removing that requirement, everyone involved can
participate at a time, and for a duration, that suits his or her schedules.
Immediate Results and Feedback: Anyone who has graded papers knows it can get tedious, and it’s
time-consuming. Many of the most popular standardized tests, in fact, still rely on evaluation
techniques that slow results. Most online learning technologies integrate online quizzes and other
tools to more rapidly evaluate the pace of learning.
Better Retention: With clever design, user experience, and multimedia, online instruction can prove
to be a richer and more effective learning experience than traditional methods and channels.
18. Why? …(2)
Greater Access to Expertise: In any country, there are only a handful of cities that can claim among their residents the
experts in every field of study. Take away the limitations of geography, and expertise is free to travel almost anywhere.
This transformation allows information on highly specialized subjects to reach more people, paving the way for
advances in fields from telemedicine to non-profit charities.
The Most Up-to-Date Content at Much Lower Cost: The sticker shock associated with the textbook market is not news
to anyone who has enrolled in even a single college course. And yet, despite the cost, our knowledge of most subjects
continues to grow and evolve, making $200 textbooks unreliable with a few years, and eventually of no use at all. The
remote delivery of curriculum allows instructors to keep materials up-to-date, and the lower costs over time remove
what for some are insurmountable obstacles to furthering their education.
A Better Fit for 21st-Century Businesses: As companies become more globally focused, co-workers are more likely to
work in different places, if not on different continents. Online learning can help prepare employees to excel in today’s
scattered, virtual office. For those already working up the career ladder, online learning makes use of resources and
technologies already at their fingertips.
19. Where?
Course Management System (CMS) – The technology platform through which online courses are
offered.
Virtual Learning Environment and Learning Management System (LMS)
Educational Platform;
In the higher education market as of fall 2013, Blackboard was the leading provider with 41% market share, with
Moodle (23%), Desire2Learn (11%) and Vclassrooming being the next three largest providers. In the corporate
market, the six largest LMS providers constitute approximately 50% of the market, with SuccessFactors Learning,
Saba Software, Voniz Inc and Sumtotal Systems being the four largest providers.
New challenges and aspirations such as MOOCs (massively online open courseware) and the
immersive 3D Web are the basis for the next generation of learning environments.

28. Value Proposition
Students have the chance to study for free, in their own time, own pace of study.
An access to all resource helps participants learn wherever they are, leaving them the freedom to
choose the time for study.
Students can attend the online classes from any location that is convenient.
Everyone can enroll into any online degree program offered by any universities around the world.
Anyone can take the course of its dream college now.
Online degree programs cost less than campus-based degree programs as most of learning
materials are in downloadable format and the credit hours required to complete an online degree
program is comparatively less.
29. Value Proposition …(2)

Better student- teacher relationship.
Better transparent education system as compared to conventional brick and mortal system.
30. Revenue Model
Advertising: by creating a competition between different institutes online via the platform creating
a need either to add value to their institute or have competitive advantage over other institutes.
This competition can be converted into revenue by showing the ads on every page / service of
platform. Ads are not limited to institutes but anyone can create an add and promote his/her
educational product / website / or can even show jobs opening to faculties.
Unlocking premium features: it may include the following
Analytics tools for institutes
Faster answer to queries of students
Analytics tools for uploaded course
31. Revenue Model …(2)
Affiliation program: other websites can show our ads on their sites. Ads will be same like that in ad
revenue model, but the difference is that extending the ad network outside website boundaries
resulting in the benefit of all.

34. Market Size (India)
1.4 million schools and 35000 higher educational institutes . More than half of the country of 1.2
billion population falls in the target market.
Set to grow from $ 20 billion to $ 40 billion by 2017.
The key factors leading to the growth of the E-learning market in India include low education
coverage, rising demand from various segments, growing personal computers and internet
penetration, increasing government participation and convenience factors. Strong opportunity
exists in the market due to low coverage of education in India. This coupled with the fact that
demand from other education segments are rising, will drive the e-learning market.
35. Market Size (India) … (2)
Indian youth are technology-driven today and find e-learning to be especially appealing. For young
working professionals with a desire to escalate their careers faster, e-learning is convenient as they
can pursue their degrees in their own space and time.
In India, with internet gaining popularity and mostly young people proficient in using it, e-learning
seems to have good growth in higher education. Some of the popular online education institutes in
India are Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute
of Foreign Trade, and private schools like Symbiosis University and Sikkim Manipal University are
offering online courses. The demand in India has sparked interests in some of the foreign
universities and they have also established tie-ups with Indian universities to offer online courses.
But India is yet to travel a long way to shift the mindset of people from distance education to online
education.
36. Market Size (India) … (3)
It might be a news to some of us to hear that industry experts state that the market size of
competitive exams preparation (GRE, GMAT, CAT, IIT-JEE, SAT, TOEFL) in India is currently $1.6
billion and service providers find online competitive exam preparation courses as yet another
profitable market. StudyPlaces.com is an online education portal in India that focuses in this arena.
With the CAT exams moving online, the experts feel that online-learning market will have a good
growth. According to CLSA Asia Pacific market report, the computer-based learning market is
expected to grow to $4 billion by 2016.

39. Market Strategy (India)
Initially targeting IITs, IIMs, NITs and DU, making student representative of each department /
branch that can track adding of reviews and study material online. Will continue this till a company
successfully capture all these institutes (by capturing we mean to have all faculties added, reviewed
and majority of study material uploaded, a healthy environment of question and answering by
students moderated and continuously pushed by student ambassadors.)
Online viral marketing with some catchy hashtag, free coupons on reviews or sharing a study
material or recharges after having earned a minimum about of points by questioning and
answering. Asking student ambassadors to spread the word on social media and asking the same
to their friends, giving them points that can be used either as recharge or buying any other product
online.
40. Market Strategy (India) … (2)
Opening offline affiliate program where registered affiliates can earn by adding new colleges, their
faculties and encouraging their students to interact online.
Contacting again the IITs, IIMs and famous colleges of our country to make profiles on our site,
initially providing them free tools.
Other institutes will just imitate them and join the party.
If we are till this point are able to generate a very fair about of traffic on our site then adding a new
products and spreading word about it would not be hard.
41. Future of online education
Moocs will get personal.
The blended model will become the new normal. By 2020, 50 per cent of all college campus
coursework will combine in-person and online learning; a shift driven by student demand for the
convenience and effectiveness of online learning. MIT’s recent task force report on the future of MIT
education, for example, was unequivocal in its support of the blended model.
Moocs as “New Age” textbooks – Many universities will use Moocs as a new kind of textbook;
including videos, game-like simulations and interactive exercises.
Closing the skills gap – Moocs will help close the skills gap for employers. Employees will be
encouraged to take online courses with self-assessment preparedness tests in specific skill sets
when hired; or even later to keep pace with emerging trends and technologies.
