2. What is distribution?
In order to gain a clear understanding of what kind of media institution would
possibly want to distribute our film opening, I had to research exactly what
distribution is. Below is are two definitions that I had found on Google.
Distribution:
1. The action of sharing something out among a number of recipients.
2. The way in which something is shared out among a group or spread over
an area.
By looking at these two definitions, it has helped me to have a clear
understanding of what it is meant by distribution and how a media institution
distributing my opening can help attract the target audience.
3. Examples of distribution companies
There are quite a lot of distribution companies, some are well known and some
are not as well known when compared to others. Below are examples of
distribution companies.
All these companies are some of the most popular
distribution companies in the film industry. All these
companies have managed to help present films
to audiences in theaters and in the forms of DVDs all
over the globe, with some of the most well known
and successful films were distributed by these
companies.
4. Comparison
Carrie is a well known film that fits the similar genre to Twisted Twins, even the
main female leads are quite similar in their own ways. The company that
distributed this film was United Artists, who have distributed about 1998 films in
total. They seem to distribute films that have a similar genre to the genre of
thriller that we had used in our own film opening. Due to this, United Artists
seems like the type of company that would distribute our film Twisted Twins,
though they are an American company and the film we had made is a film
made in the United Kingdom. This would be a sort of advantage as films
distributed in America seem to become more successful due to the larger
population and the techniques that American companies such as this one
use to help market and draw in the target audience.
5. Will our opening appeal to UK audiences
only?
Due to the opening being made in England, most people would probably
expect it to appeal to UK audiences only, however I personally believe that
our opening has a wider appeal which can attract audiences from different
countries such as America. Though it'll appeal more to UK audiences, the film
doesn't involve too many aspects that American audiences wouldn't
understand, only about one or two words and phrases. There have been films
made in England that have also been successful in America and other
countries, the main examples being the James Bond series and films made by
Aardman such as Wallace and Gromit.
6. Possible marketing strategies
Due to the modern technology that people use nowadays, especially the
target audience that we are aiming for, I believe that one of the best
marketing strategies would be to distribute the film onto Apple iTunes so that
the target audience are able to watch the film whenever and wherever they
are. This would also allow for more people noticing it due to teenagers nearly
always downloading films, music, apps and games daily or at least once a
week.
Another method that could be used for good marketing strategies could be
that we promote the film in public by attending conventions and organize a
panel. Panels at conventions are often very popular and are used for the
audience to ask questions to the actors and directors of a particular series.
This would allow the target audience to feel more involved and learn some
more about the film before its release.
7. Self-distribution?
Some film companies decide to distribute the films themselves which makes it easier and successful for
some companies, however there are some cons as there are pros to this.
Pros:
~ You are able to keep full control and the rights over your own film rather than giving some of the rights
and control to another company. This also gives you the choice of where your film is shown.
~ You don't have to use some of the money you've earned to pay a distributer.
Cons:
~ It would involve almost full-time work which is very time consuming, it's much easier to allow another
company to distribute the film whilst you get on with any work that you have left to do.
~ It could limit your options of sales as distributers have already established a good relationship with the
target audience and so it can be difficult for you to try and gain attention from the target audience.
