2. Blood as a prescription
 Blood transfusions require a prescription from a physician
 The physician writes what kind of blood transfusion (red cells,
platelets, plasma)
 Blood donors are the ESSENTIAL link between the
physician’s prescription and the transfusion dependent
patient
 1 out of 7 hospitalized patients in our community will require
a blood transfusion

3. Why host blood drives?
 Every day between 600-800 people in our community need a
blood transfusion to survive – about every 90 seconds
 38% of our population is eligible to give blood at any time,
however less than 4% actually does
 Every pint of blood can help save 3 lives because it can be
processed into red cells, plasma, and platelets
 Carter BloodCare needs to register 1,100 donors a day to fill
this need

 The population is aging – we need to educate younger
people about the need
 Host drives more often – shift work
 Host a platelet drive
 Refer a friend
 Times of Need
– Summer (lack of high school drives)
– Winter (holidays and illnesses)

the community needs
