Brave Disney/Pixar have done it again with their new smash hit animated movie Brave! From the creators of such H ow ard N aomi V irosh N ikki Lidia classic films as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles & the Academy Award winning Up, there is no shortage of inspiration, imagination and incredible storytelling that we have all come to love and admire. Brave is the story of Merida (Kelly Macdonald) a skilled archer from a Scottish village who’s out to prove that traditions can be broken but at what cost? Her Father King Fergus voiced by the wonderful Billy Connelly and her mother Queen S tev e Zakari Widy a Brett M agz Elinor (Emma Thompson) are shocked at the revelation of their daughter’s defiance towards their family tradition, previously reserved exclusively for men in the past! Three Lords of the realm have adhered to a strict F acebook social plugin code that Merida breaks, out of a longing to prove her worth which causes great chaos and confusion in the Kingdom. Merida then turns to an eccentric witch (Julie Walters) for help, but is then cursed and must discover true bravery by reversing the curse and restoring her family’s honour! This is Pixar’s first fairytale and is ADVERTISING somewhat darker in tone, feel and storyline as opposed to their previous films. Having said all that, it’s still a joyous romp, very colourful and remarkably subtle with just the right amount of humour, action and heart tugging moments too. It’s fresh to see a female character leading the way for the first time as well and yes it’s in glorious 3D. (MR)
  2. 2. Snow White and the Huntsman It seems to be a trend nowadays that the age old fairytales that we have come to love are getting their own glorious makeovers, becoming somewhat darker in feel, story and scope. The question is, has it worked and really breathed life into an idea that been done to death? Gladly, it’s a resounding yes and I was surprised by the twists and turns this movie took me on. Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) the ruthless leader has taken over and ARCHIVES conquered many European Kingdoms. With her heart set on the kingdom of England as her next trophy the Queen is enraged to find out that her beautiful stepdaughter Snow White (Kristen Stewart), is set to not only be ‘the fairest one of all’ but is also in line to be the next ruler of the Kingdom! As one would remember from the Select Month original story the Queen had a magic mirror… this time round in a darker sense her mirror warns her that for Ravenna to remain in power she must consume Snow Whites heart to achieve immortality. Gladly, Snow White escapes and runs for her life into the enchanted Dark Forest and Ravenna is furious therefore hiring a Huntsman by the name of Eric (Chris Hemsworth) to track her down and kill her! Eric pities the young princess and ends up teaching her life saving skills in the art of war. With the help of eight dwarves, her childhood love Prince William and knights from the Kingdom, Snow White then leads a powerful revolution against the Queen and her Tyrannical rule.
