China imports more Tin ore from Myanmar
after Indonesian export ban
SHANGHAI (Scrap
Register): China, the world's
biggest tin importer, has
imported more tin ore from Myanmar after the Indonesian export ban.
A news report from Shanghai Metals Marketsaying Myanmar has remained
the top supplier of tin ore to China during March this year with 16,415 tons, the figure
represented a sharp increase of 465% from a month earlier and 39.3% year-on-year. First three
months of this year China imported 38,283 tons of tin ore, a rise of 17.3% year-on-year.
China's tin industry is turning to Myanmar to help plug a gap in the supply of raw materials after
new trading rules in the world's top exporter Indonesia squeezed its major source of refined tin.
China has more than doubled its imports of tin ore and concentrates from Myanmar this year,
shoring up an alternative source of the metal used mainly for solder in its vast electronics
industry.
Refined tin imports rebounded from low February levels to 964 metric tons, while exports also
rose from holiday lows to 200 metric tons. Apparent consumption gained 13% year-on-year,
after a weak 2013, in signs that demand may be finally improving.
