2. Theme: Experience
Experience as a general concept
comprises knowledge of or skill in or
observation of some thing or some
event gained through involvement in
or exposure to that thing or event.
In the film, Hugo, a boy has a broken
automaton, a mechanical figure
made out of very complicated
clockworks that can write on paper.
This figure inspires in Hugo Cabret a
passion for fixing things. By tinkering
with the automaton and other
devices Hugo gains experience.
3. Research
One of the main inspirations the book the film was based on is Edison’s Eve:
A Magical Quest for Mechanical Life by an author named Gaby Wood.
Wood had an entire chapter about Georges Méliès in her book because
Méliès owned a collection of automata. The mechanical figures had been
built years earlier by a magician and clockmaker named Jean-Robert
Houdin (the magician who Harry Houdini named himself after).

5. The Assignment
Create at least three textured
objects in Maya; theme: Things I’ve
Learned in My Life So
Far/Experience.
This series of objects should have
some personal meaning and
represent the knowledge you have
gained through your involvement in
or exposure to a specific thing or
event.
Editor's Notes
Hugo’s talent for fixing things captures the attention of a toy shop owner who employs him.
Objects such as clockworks and gears that make up automata can be sketched and even built using a 3D modeling program like Maya.
A cryptic drawing, a treasured notebook, a stolen key, a mechanical man, and a hidden message all come together...in The Invention of Hugo Cabret. These can all be re-created in Maya 3D. If you’re new to Maya try to keep your objects simple to start.
