Role of the Department Library in the Google Era: a perspective
Department library in the google era - November 2008
Department library in the google era - November 2008
Mary Joan Crowley
This paper associated with these slides analyses the theoretical and practical implications of crowdsourcing two different kinds of text: transcriptions and annotations. Two projects that adopt the model for these respective purposes are Transcribe Bentham and Ossian Online. They exhibit differing motivations for choosing this model, and aim to crowdsource tasks whose requirements and biases place particular demands and restrictions on participants. As a consequence, the accuracy of the term crowdsource must be questioned for more subjective tasks that require the generation of original intellectual content.

This talk, delivered at the February 2010 OCLC Regional Council Seminar in Auckland NZ, explores the turbulent conditions in which libraries are evolving as both places and virtual spaces on the Web. How are these conditions driving change in library collections, catalogues, and cooperative systems? What are OCLC's strategies for helping today's libraries gain visibility and impact through cooperation and data sharing? If we were building a system for library cooperation today, what would it look like?

Libraries, archives and museums are sites of community memory. The first public computerized bulletin board system was called community memory. Trevor’s talk will explore the connections between the development of the web as a global knowledge base, the open source software movement, and digital strategy for libraries, archives and museums. This keynote talk will synthesize research on the history of online community software with practical experience working on open source digital library projects. This exploration underscores the essential role cultural heritage institutions need to play in this era of the web and some important distinctions between how the concept of community is deployed in discussions of the web.

Transforming a government website with 200 content authors, tens of thousands of pages, and close to 100 different content templates into a responsive design system is tricky business. In 2013, we led a project to update and future-proof one of Canada’s fastest-growing municipalities’ main communication channel: Surrey.ca. The responsive redesign achieved unanimous support from city staff, business stakeholders, council, and the mayor. Mobile traffic has increased by 300% since launch. The improved governance and content workflow processes have facilitated new collaborations between silo’d City departments. The Surrey Web Team described this as one of the most positive changes in recent history for the City’s external and internal communication. Most importantly, it created a sense of cohesion through a wholehearted responsive design process. This project required a new approach. We needed the ability to connect deeply with everyone on our project team: client, vendor, and audience. We needed to get comfortable with imperfection, and fight through difficult moments as a team. We let go of our usual need to protect ourselves and maintain control, and worked together to solve our responsive design and adaptive content problems. Our collaborative creativity was a catalyst for changing the way the City communicates. What you’ll take away from this talk: - Understand how a responsive design process impacts team dynamics and workflow - Learn how to encourage collaboration across departments and conquer organizational silos - Hear how a responsive discovery can change a project (and why that’s okay) - Get cozy with your customers, stakeholders, and content authors – we’re all allies in the fight to make the web a better place

John LeCarre famously said, “‘The cat sat on the mat’ is not the beginning of a story; ‘the cat sat on the dog’s mat’ is.” We need very little introduction to the art of storytelling, but the craft of story is more nuanced and is a skill we can hone. Unless you’re already fully-engaged in storytelling in one form or another, it’s rare that we get to explore these nuances in practice. Come and have some fun with Steph in this interactive session as she demonstrates little ways we can get better at the craft of story—a universal skill that you can use in everything you do. This talk covers some of the material from her forthcoming book: UX Storytelling Handbook.

In March 1989, Tim Berners-Lee wrote a “vague, but exciting” proposal for a hypertext-based information management system. That proposal eventually became the World Wide Web, a system that rapidly outgrew the competition, moved beyond the altruistic goals of its creator, and today dominates the Internet. Kimberly Blessing, a twenty-year veteran of the Web, will put lessons learned during those early days into a modern context for the next generation of web designers and developers.

Tools are an essential part of our discipline. They afford us the opportunity to execute our work in the ways that we intended. However, the landscape of what is available to carry out our work has changed rapidly over the last decade—from the applications we use to strategize and design, to the frameworks and methodologies we use to build and deploy. These tools have not only influenced our processes, but also the way we approach our discipline. In this presentation, I'll explore the evolution of the design practice and the tools we use to craft our work.

Time magazine recently proclaimed that the transgender movement is “the next civil rights frontier.” Are you unsure of what it means to be transgender? You’re not alone. Everyone has a gender identity. Gender influences our customers’ behaviors. It influences the way our customers present themselves to the world. We’re making design decisions for customers whose gender identity affects their lives, both offline and online. Designers have struggled to understand the intersection of gender and design for decades. We often overlook gender or take it for granted. Sometimes we resort to assumptions like women like pink stuff and men like football, but these assumptions rarely help us make an authentic connection with our audience. Meanwhile, a new civil rights movement is disrupting the notion of gender identity. As designers, what do we need to understand about gender identity? How do we design experiences that are inclusive for everyone? The answer, as any UX designer will tell you, is it depends. Gender’s role in the design process varies from project to project. We’ll explore gender identity, what we as designers need to know about gender identity, and why an understanding of gender identity will help us make effective designs even stronger.

After consulting with several companies on performance related issues, it became clear that one of the biggest performance issues facing websites today is the sheer amount of JavaScript needed to power the page. The demand for more interactive and responsive applications has driven JavaScript usage through the roof. It’s quite common for large sites to end up with over 1 MB of JavaScript code on their page even after minification. But do today’s web applications really need that much JavaScript?

I've spent most of my career as part of a team working in an office, making the web a little better each day. When starting my own company, however, one of my goals was to find ways to work with the people I looked up to… who had their own separate offices in different companies spread out all over the world. In order to get started, I had to think differently about a lot of things: my day, my network, my goals, and how I communicate. I've found that working together across the internets has a lot more to do with the ability to share a vision, and a lot less to do with which is the best digital video conference service.

Every decision we make affects the way real people experience our products. We've all heard the rallying cry for user-centered design, but even those of us who ascribe to that ideal often fall back on our own biases and instincts when it comes to making decisions about how people experience our content and our services. Sadly, this often means we make decisions we think will be good for our “users” - that anonymous, faceless crowd - rather than actually trying to understand the perspectives, surroundings, capabilities, and disadvantages of the actual people who we are here to serve. In this session, Aaron will explore why empathy is a good thing, how empathy empowers creativity, and how we, as a community, can inject more empathy into our work.
