  2. 2. <ul><li>Sending messages through other means than by talking or writing. </li></ul>What is Non-Verbal Communication? Recall that non-verbal communication means: To become an effective non verbal communicator it is imperative to understand the basics of non verbal communication .

  5. 5. <ul><li>EYE CONTACT </li></ul><ul><li>Sends a message about the interest you port to what a person says </li></ul><ul><li>Tells how you perceive yourself compared to that person. </li></ul>FACIAL EXPRESSIONS <ul><li>Determine what people are thinking and feeling </li></ul><ul><li>Words and facial expression can be contradictory </li></ul><ul><li>Example: someone telling you everything’s fine when their faces look sad </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>What a person wears may convey a message about the type of personality they possess </li></ul><ul><li>There are clothes appropriate for various types of situation. For example: </li></ul>APPEARANCE The first image would create a better type of impression during an interview rather than the second image. It demonstrates that the person is more serious and creates a better image. It is also more appropriate.
  7. 7. <ul><li>Through postures, one can convey feelings and attitudes. </li></ul><ul><li>One who is sitting in this kind of posture may demonstrate that he/she is in a position of power.. </li></ul><ul><li>Whereas, one who is sitting in this kind of posture may suggest that he/she is interested in the conversation, and is attentive by the way they are leaning in. </li></ul>POSTURE
  8. 8. <ul><li>ENVIRONMENT </li></ul><ul><li>The way you arrange the space around you conveys a message about you. </li></ul><ul><li>Directs the interactions that are going to take place in that area. </li></ul><ul><li>EX: Round table. </li></ul>TIME For example, punctuality is a tool of non-verbal communication. Arriving 10 minutes early demonstrates that you are organized, as opposed to arriving 10 minutes late.
  9. 9. <ul><li>Research has shown that many people like to keep the distance between one another </li></ul><ul><li>In other words our “personal bubble” </li></ul><ul><li>Some may feel uncomfortable when someone enters their “bubble” in proximity, meaning the amount of space someone needs to communicate effectively </li></ul><ul><li>Factors that affect this: familiarity, characteristics and situational cultural factors </li></ul><ul><li>Make sure that you do not invade someone’s personal space by keeping a regular distance between the other. </li></ul>TERRITORIALITY
  10. 10. <ul><li>EFFECTIVE NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION TIPS </li></ul><ul><li>Establish good eye contact </li></ul><ul><li>Use your posture to support your words and show interest </li></ul><ul><li>Structure your environment so that it send the right message </li></ul><ul><li>Pay attention to other peoples non verbal cues </li></ul><ul><li>Ask questions to make sure you understood the right thing </li></ul><ul><li>Be careful of cultural differences in non verbal messages </li></ul><ul><li>Pay attention to appearance </li></ul><ul><li>Practice and observe the non nonverbal messages you send </li></ul><ul><li>Adapt to the situation </li></ul><ul><li>Update your knowledge of non verbal communication </li></ul>
