Q2. How does your media
product represent particular
      social groups?
The target audience of my magazine was 16-18 year olds of both
genders. My magazine is focused around rock music.. Doing a
reader profile helped me gain an understanding of what kind of
people would be reading my magazine and what stereotypes and
interests these people would have.
Some of these stereotypes are:
•Grungy
•Gothic
•Edgy
•Scene Kids
•Hipsters
•Rebelling against society
•Sticking it to the man
•Live fast, die young
•Their main interested would be music
So listening to rock music
Going to rock concerts and festivals
Scene Kids are the main stereotype of people that listen to rock music, their
style is very different to high street fashions and they often wear lots of bright
colours mixed with lots of black, so their style is quite a statement. Scene kids
follow most of the usually stereotypes of rock music, such as rebelling against
society and living fast, dying young.
So whilst making my magazine I took into
account all the stereotypes and interests of
people that listened to rock music so that my
magazine would appeal to that audience, and
from that, my magazine represents that social
group.
Front cover
The main colours on the front cover of my
magazine are blue, green, pink and white. All of
these colours are very bright colours and these are
the same types of colours that a scene kid would
dress in.
The image of the girl I have on the front is dressed
in very scene, grungy clothes with the sleeves of
her top being cut off, lots of bracelets on her wrist
and bright pink in her hair. This is very typical dress
for somebody that listens to rock music.
The name of my magazine ‘Lithium’ is a very edgy
name for a magazine, Lithium is a dangerous,
reactive metal and this represents rock music as
rock can be seen as quite and dangerous,
outspoken genre of music.
The font I have used on this page is also quite edgy
and bold.
On the page I have two advertisements for different
rock festivals, this represents the readers of my
magazine as this is one of the things they like to do.
The names of the bands that I have put onto the
page are all very edgy and grungy names, such as
‘neverdie’ and ‘we bring silence’. They are all quite
dark and dangerous, which represents the
personalities of people that like rock music.
Contents Page
I have followed through with the bright
colours that I used on the front cover onto
the contents page as these are the colours
that scene kids would be attracted to.
I used black as the colour for my
background, black is usually seen as a dark
and evil kind of colour and this fits in with
genre of rock music and the people that
listen to it, as a usual stereotypes of people
that listen to rock music is that they like to
wear black.
The main image that i have put on the page,
I edited to make it look quite scratchy and
worn, this makes it look very edgy and
gothic.
I have also included a ‘monthly gig guide’
and ‘your concert photos’ into the
magazine, this represents the interests of
people that read my magazine.
Double Page Spread
Again I have followed
through with the black
background to represent
the darkness of rock music.
I have a small advertisement
for the band I have
interviewed album on the
page, this represents what
interests reader of the
magazine have.
The main image I have used
on my page, I have also
edited to make look worn
and tatty. This make the
page look more grungy. The
picture is also of a band
performing live which is one
of the main hobbies of
people that listen to rock
music.
