'Lilavati' was one of the mathematical texts written by Bhaskaracharya-II (1114 - 1193 CE), a well-known Indian mathematician. 2. Splitting a number
(i) 14 x 21 21
 21 = 20 + 1 20 + 1
 Hence, 14 x 21 = 14 x 20 + 14 x 1
14 x 20 = 280
+14 x 1 = 14
Answer = 294

3. The same calculation can be done by
splitting 14
(i) 14 x 21 14
 14 = 10 + 4 10 + 4
 Hence, 21 x 14 = 21 x 10 + 21 x 4
21 x 10 = 210
+21 x 4 = 84
Answer = 294

4. Another example
(ii) 32 x 12 12
 12 = 10 + 2 10 + 2
 32 x 12 = 32 x 10 + 32 x 2
32 x 10 = 320
+32 x 2 = 64
Answer = 384

5. Try splitting 32
(ii) 32 x 12 32
 32 = 30 + 2 30 + 2
 12 x 32 = 12 x 30 + 12 x 2
12 x 30 = 360
+12 x 2 = 24
Answer = 384

6. (iii) 23 x 15
 15 = 10 + 5 15
 23 x 15 = 23 x 10 + 23 x 5
10 + 5
23 x 10 = 230
+23 x 5 = 115
Answer = 345

7. (iii) 23 x 15 by splitting 23
 23 = 20 + 3
 15 x 23 = 15 x 20 + 15 x 3
15 x 20 = 300
+15 x 3 = 45
Answer = 345

8.  In this way, we can do multiplication in a faster
way. But what if we have numbers like 78 x
97? Splitting numbers in the above said way
and calculating would still consume time.
 For such type of numbers, we have some
other techniques to get the answers faster.
