Phonetics has been studied since 500 BC in ancient India by Panini, an Indian grammarian whose work on Sanskrit grammar influenced the development of linguistic science in Western Europe. In the 17th-18th centuries, researchers studied lateral and nasal sounds, and the 19th-20th centuries saw the creation of the International Phonetic Alphabet to allow consistent representation of pronunciation across languages. Phonetics is now often studied alongside phonology as an interdisciplinary field. Key developments include the invention of the laryngoscope in 1829 and establishment of the International Phonetic Association in 1886. Phonetics is taught and researched around the world, including at the University of London and University of California.
