Proactive Strategies to Change
    Student Misbehavior
       By Melissa Winfield
They have been previously
“rewarded” for their misbehavior
Solution:
  Say what you expect
  without showing emotion
  and then follow through
  consistently if they
  continue the negative
  behavior. The two keys
  here are: showing no
  emotion and little talking.
  Once students see that
  you are serious an
  unwavering they will
  begin to take you
  seriously.
2. Different sets of expectations
   between school and home
                 Solution:
                   Teachers should make attempts
                    to collaborate with parents.
                    Parents should learn a simple
                    method to discipline and then
                    have a conversation with their
                    child’s teacher. During this
                    conversation, the parents should
                    explain their method and ask how
                    the teacher handles situations.
                    The goal is to try and use some
                    of the same language at both the
                    school and at home. With a
                    consistent, clear message,
                    children will rise to the
                    expectation and be happier in the
                    process.
3. They feel ill, bored, hungry or
             sleepy.
Solution:
  Know your students and
  their needs. Be sure to
  have a routine where the
  student eats, has
  individual play time, or
  interaction time and
  communicate with
  parents to ensure the
  child is getting an
  adequate amount of
  sleep each night.
4. They want to test whether
 authority will enforce rules.
               Solution:
                 Set boundaries and
                 limits and consistently
                 following through on
                 them. By doing this
                 children will adopt
                 positive values and
                 gain self-esteem and
                 will also be more apt
                 to be accepting of
                 rules.
5. They want to assert themselves
       and their independence.
Solution:
   Give them many opportunities
   to choose things in their daily
   life so that they feel in control
   of their life in other, more
   positive ways. As well, it is key
   to learn a simple, loving
   method of discipline so that
   misbehaviors are taken care of
   easily, without any emotion
   required. Without emotion,
   there is no reason for the child
   to want to rebel in order to gain
   control.

Proactive strategies to change student misbehavior

  • 1. Proactive Strategies to Change Student Misbehavior By Melissa Winfield
  • 2. They have been previously “rewarded” for their misbehavior Solution: Say what you expect without showing emotion and then follow through consistently if they continue the negative behavior. The two keys here are: showing no emotion and little talking. Once students see that you are serious an unwavering they will begin to take you seriously.
  • 3. 2. Different sets of expectations between school and home Solution: Teachers should make attempts to collaborate with parents. Parents should learn a simple method to discipline and then have a conversation with their child’s teacher. During this conversation, the parents should explain their method and ask how the teacher handles situations. The goal is to try and use some of the same language at both the school and at home. With a consistent, clear message, children will rise to the expectation and be happier in the process.
  • 4. 3. They feel ill, bored, hungry or sleepy. Solution: Know your students and their needs. Be sure to have a routine where the student eats, has individual play time, or interaction time and communicate with parents to ensure the child is getting an adequate amount of sleep each night.
  • 5. 4. They want to test whether authority will enforce rules. Solution: Set boundaries and limits and consistently following through on them. By doing this children will adopt positive values and gain self-esteem and will also be more apt to be accepting of rules.
  • 6. 5. They want to assert themselves and their independence. Solution: Give them many opportunities to choose things in their daily life so that they feel in control of their life in other, more positive ways. As well, it is key to learn a simple, loving method of discipline so that misbehaviors are taken care of easily, without any emotion required. Without emotion, there is no reason for the child to want to rebel in order to gain control.
