1. Opening sequence
Treatment
Love can kill you!
The title of our opening sequence is Underground Kings and the genre that we
chose to go with was drama. Due to this decision, our target audience would be
young adults between the ages of 18 to25; our secondary audience would be 15
and older.
Target audience
In order to determine a target audience we had to look back to earlier lessons at
audience profiling .first we looked at the demographics and established that
there would not be a real gender focus but that it would be more likely for
males to watch our film due to the themes. the film will focus mainly on people
aged 18-25 this is a result of the fact that these ages will be the most likely to
relate to the events of the film, as our film is a drama the audience will need to
relate to the real life events to make their experience of the film better. we had
to think about where we would release the film so we decided that we would
release it only in the UK as the gangs are Uk gangs and other countries wouldn’t
be familiar with the concepts and activities that happen within the gangs. We
looked at the socio-economic model and came to the conclusion that our film
would be targeted at groups D&E these are semi or unskilled blue collar workers
and students. Another aspect of audience profiling that we looked t was
psychographics. We thought about what our audience would desire when
watching or film and came to the conclusion that people would be looking for an
escape as they would want to get away from their life struggles and see that
there is a life out there that is worse than theirs to make them feel better about
them selves
Synopsis
The film is about a teenage girl living in south west London that is recruited by
a notorious gang called.... for posing as a set up chick to earn some money.( A
set up chick is a girl that is hired by a gang to place a boy in an awkward or
unpleasant situation by guile or deceit; to play emotional games with a boy
prior to letting them down which normally ends with someone getting seriously
injured or killed. Life seems to be going well for her until she is asked to set up
a boy that with time she ends up falling in love with. She then has to make a
decision whether to set the boy up or to stick with him as the gang begins to be
on her case on the matter her life becomes more and more endangered by the
days.
2. Overview
We will begin by showing a medium close at a bird’s eye view of jay slowly
dying breathing his last breaths all the way up until the point that he dies .cold
will play through this in order to create a sad and melancholy mood . Then we
will rewind back to a time before all the characters became acquainted. This
will show Disney returning home late at night and trying to sneak money into
her mother’s bag. We will the skip to a shot of Tushan with his members
causing trouble or loitering around the council estate. Throughout the whole
thing Jay will be underlining the opening sequence and narrating the
information about the characters. The opening sequence will then end back on
Jays dead body then as it blacks out No Apologies is played as we reveal the title
of the film.
Directing style
We will be using a nonlinear narrative in our film as we will begin at the end of
the film where we see jay slowly dying this is so that we can raise questions for
the audience making them want to continue watching and become hooked from
the very beginning . Nonlinear narrative is a narrative technique, sometimes
used in film and other narratives, where events are portrayed, for example out
of chronological order, or in other ways where the narrative does not follow the
direct causality pattern of the events featured, such as parallel distinctive plot
lines, dream immersions or narrating another story inside the main plot-line.
Music
We will be using music in our opening sequence and have emailed the
production companies to ask for permission to use their songs. We will be using
“cold” by Jorge Mendez this is a slow tempo sad song. We will also be using no
apologies by Eminem. This will be played after the death of jay in our opening
sequence to contrast with the slow tempo of our first song choice.
Binary oppositions and themes
Some key themes and binary oppositions within our opening sequence will be;
big vs. small, good vs. evil and brains vs. brawn.
Characters
Jay: jay is the protagonist of the film as he is the boy that the ganging has
chosen for Teresa to set up. Jay is an innocent boy that just wants to get through
college and for fill his goal of becoming a football player. Due to the area, that
he lives in he is often subdued in to hanging around with the wrong people. He
ends up being in the wrong place at the wrong times and gets involved in a gang
rivalry that causes him to be threatened by the gang.
3. Disney/Teresa: Disney is a girl that is hired by the gang to set people up. She
believes that this is the only way she is able to help her mother, as she has to
work extra hours at work to provide for her family. Her father left when she
was young and has forever struggled to trust any male since that point but
begins to see life differently when she meets jay. This situation leaves her in
two minds weather to change her lifestyle or to continue.
Tushan (TT): This is the gang leader. He is a very aggressive person with a lot
of power as his gang has control of most of the area they live in. He lives with
his dad only on the council estate and is well know by everyone on the estate.
His father is far from a good role model and used to sell drugs on the street
which has influenced tushan to take this route in life. He is a very possessive
boyfriend to Disney and uses her for sex .His gang has a confrontation with rival
gang and orders Disney to set up jay but then fells that he is forced to take
action against both of them as he finds that she has fallen in love with jay .
Visual elements and mise en scene
As a group we came up with having all members of the gang wearing all black to
show that they are all part of the same group but also that the colour black has
negative connotations of evil and death which helps to back up the events and
concepts of the film. Although the gang members are wearing black we decided
that we would have them wearing different coloured shoes in our opening
sequence which would help to show their underlining qualities.
Tushan will wear red shoes
Red represents
Power
Strength
Anger danger
warning
Disney will wear pink shoes
Pink represents
Feminine
Compassion
Jay will wear all blue not only to show difference to the audience from other
characters but it’s also as sign to Disney that he is different to who she is
normally used to hanging out with.
Jay will wear blue
Blue represents
Love
Loyalty
Security
Trust
4. The enigma code and how we will use it
We will be integrating the enigma code early on into our opening sequence, as
we will start by seeing jay slowly dying. This will raise many questions for the
audience as to how jay got to this point and who the killer was. This is the first
time the audience wound have seen any of the characters so by starting at this
point will ensure that we will end our opening sequence on a cliff hanger which
will leave our audience wantinganswers for their questions.
Equipment and resources
For our opening sequence we will need a camera my group will be using our
own camera which is a Nikon D3200, we will need a tripod also to ensure our
footage is sturdy and there are no visible signs of shaking coming through when
watching it back, we will be borrowing a tripod from our schools media
department .My group will be filming all of our audio on a separate microphone
as sometimes trying to film and get the audio together the audio often comes
out at a lower quality.
Problems we could face and how we will overcome them
Weather will pose as a problem for us as we will need good lighting in order to
get good shots so we may need to borrow lights in order to rectify this also we
will need to account for pedestrians walking in and out of our frame as we will
be shooting in an open space. As the group will not always be together we will
need to find time in order to shoot our opening sequence
Summary
To summarise our goal is to create a gripping piece of Drama that will notify
people of gang life in the uk and its dangers. We plan for the film to resemble
something along the lines of the brotherhood, adulthood and kidulthood trilogy
but with many different themes and objectives making it an entirely new idea
all by its self
