2. Introduction
• Marriage has been around for many years, some
people say dating back to 5,000 years ago.
Marriages primary purpose was to allow the
people to have children that were biologically
theirs. But then divorce came in to the picture.
Now days divorce if quite frequent, which is a sad
thing. Divorce happens when the person you
choose to marry decides they can’t live with you
anymore or they find another spouse who they
like better.
3. Marriage in
Mesopotamia
• Marriage in Mesopotamia was quite different
then it is here. In Mesopotamia the Dad
decided on who the girl was going to marry
and the family limit of guests was quite
restricted at the weddings. So the Dad would
walk his daughter down the isle and the
Mother would walk her son down the isle but
the daughter didn’t really know who she’s
about to marry until the couple is married.
4. Marriage in
Mesopotamia 2
• During the ceremony the husband had to pour
a perfume on the wife’s forehead, as this was
an ancient tradition. Then they would unwrap
the presents, where the wife may receive a
marriage jointer or a nundunnu, a silver plate
or gold. Then once married the wife would
become apart of the husbands family, and
usually never see her family again.
5. Marriage in Egypt
• Marriage in Egypt was very similar to how we
marry now here in Canada. One of the main
rules were and still are you must get married at
a temple. The bride also sits on a throne that
her servants carry her on. There was very little
information on the internet so it was difficult
to find out about it.
6. Marriage in Canada
• Marriage in Canada is very straight forward.
You must be legal age which is 18 years old,
you must do the vows depending on what
religion you are, you also must have wedding
rings. The ceremony can be the way you want
it to be and there’s no limit to the amount of
people you can invite.

• You also need to have an marriage license
before getting married. If you get your parents
permission you can also get married at 16. You
also need both of your parents permission to
do this.
8. Marriage in Ancient
Rome
• Marriage in Rome is the most similar to
marriage in Canada. Before getting married
you must make a sacrifice of some sort at a
church. Wealthy young men usually are
married in their 20’s and same for the ladies.
They would bridesmaids and groomsmen with
the mother walking her son down the isle and
vise versa.
9. Marriage in Ancient
Rome 2
• For the after ceremony there was usually lots
of people and a lot of Italian food. Everybody
would bring gifts and it would be a massive
celebration.
10. Marriage in the Viking
Days
• Marriage in the Viking days was similar to what
we have now. The couples wedding had to
take place within a timeline. Usually the
wedding ceremony would take place at the
bride's home. A Viking wedding went on much
longer than a traditional Christian ceremony,
the festivities were very much inclusive of
alcohol and blessing. Within the ceremony
many rituals were performed to ensure and to
remove any evil spirits or intentions.
11. Marriage in the Viking
Days 2
• The name honeymoon has it's origins in the
Vikings drinking after the marriage. The
ceremonies the Christian Viking’s were a
mixture of the two faiths and over time they
were slowly removed. The journey of the bride
to the wedding venue and on to her new
home, is a focus that continues to this day.
