Exploring
the Ocean
in One
Breath
Free Diving is a sport
where people swim as far as they
can down to the bottom of the
ocean or pool. This activity
depends on the divers ability on
holding their breath. These
people go to the depths of the
sea in just one single breath.
People use free diving mainly for
breaking records and exploring
the
ocean
without
any
technology such as scuba tanks
and gear. People also use it to
spear fish. Free Diving is
considered an extreme sport
because you can die very easy.
That’s a good question. Why would people
want to dive down into pitch black water
that is making you feel like and elephant is
sitting on you and poking things into to your
ears because of the pressure. Most people
do free diving because that is how they can
practice for other sports that involve
holding your breath for a long time. To do
this sport you have to be a risk taker. Some
sports they practice for are Surfing,
Swimming and a couple more. The main
reason why people do free diving is because
they want to break records and push to
their limits. They do this to see what their
body can do and how strong they are. Free
Diving is a sport that seems really difficult.
Personally I would not want to try free
diving.
That is one reason why people
do free diving. That on reason is that
they want to show people that nothing is
impossible and you can do whatever you
want. They show others that they can do
things that so many people can’t do.
They also prove their self's by showing
what their own body can do. They push
to limits and see how their body and
brain reacts to it. You can’t learn that do
normal sports like soccer and baseball.
Humans want to know what they can do,
they want to see if their body is made to
do extreme sports. Many people probably
could do well free diving but some just
don’t try to push to their limits and try
something extreme that other people
don’t just do.
People don’t just come up and dive as far as they can to try to
beat the world, they have to practice. If people did that then they
would for surely die trying. To start of people have to start of
practicing is pools going short distances getting bigger once they feel
they can move on. One main problem you need to practice for is the
water pressure. The pressure is really hard on your ears when you go
down deep into water. That is one thing you have probably noticed
swimming a swimming pool. You might think that hurts your ears but
free divers have to go a lot deeper than that.
Another part of free diving is when you
explore the bottom of the ocean. It’s similar to
scuba diving but without a tank. You might think
why do people just hold their breath instead of
using a tank because they would have to come up
to the surface so much you could barely see
anything. Well if you can hold your breath like
free divers can it is defiantly worth it. Free divers
explore with out a tank because it allows them to
go right up to animals without scaring them for
example if you were a fish and a huge guy with air
bubbles and mettle tanks on his back came up to
you would you be scared. These people get to
explore things that others can’t explore with a
tank. Free divers can just swim up to sharks and
sharks will think of them as just neighbors
swimming around. If I could hold my breath like
those people I would want to explore the sea.
Another part of free diving is
spear fishing. Spear fishing is going
under water with a spear gun and trying
to hit fish. This method is instead of
fishing with a fishing rod. Normal spear
fishing is with scuba diving equipment
but this kind is pretty much just with
your breath and a spear gun. When spear
fishing in free diving style it would be a
lot easier because you don’t look like a
huge robot with a bunch of bubbles
coming out from it. When doing this you
are quiet and camouflaged. This is a
good way to go spear fishing if you can
hold your breath.
You might think that all you need to
free Dive is water, well that’s not true. The
picture I showed you last on the slide is a good
place to free dive because there is no currents
except going up or down. If their were currents
going sideways you could hit something and get
injured which would not allow them to get back
to the surface. In the middle of the ocean you
could easily get lost and not be able to find the
surface. Also sometimes when you are free
diving you are allowed to use fins witch would
make it even harder if there was a current
because you could not push of the sides of the
rocks or walls. Another reason people free dive
at dean’s blue hole is because the side of the
hole are just sand, which allows you to use the
sides without injuring yourself and not being
able to come to the surface. This blue hole is
where most professional free divers go diving.
Herbert Nitsch is currently the free
diving world record holder and also the deepest
man on earth. His record was set is 2007 going
down 214 meters (702 feet) in the No Limit
Discipline. Later in his life on June 6th, 2012 he
passed his record going down to 253.2 meters
which is 830.8 feet, but suffered from
depression sickness after. Some amazing facts
about Herbert Nitsch are that he can hold his
breath for over nine minutes and has set 32
different world records. Herbert Nitsch is
different from other good free divers because he
is a self taught free diver which means no
teacher ever taught him how to free dive. He is
not only a free diver but is also a pilot for
Australian Airlines. He also works to make
advanced gear for free diving. Herbert Nitsch is
a very talented person.
One thing that would help free divers
is something called the Fluid Goggles. These
goggles were made by the world record free
divers, Herbert Nitsch. These goggles are not
mandatory to every free diver but they
definitely would help. These goggles have a
couple cool qualities. One thing about these
goggles that there is a clear space underneath
the lens that allows you to see over outside of
the water. Another quality about the fluid
goggles is that there is slow temperature
change because of the fluid lenses. For each
diver, these goggles are custom fit to your eyes
and head so they fit perfectly. All this leads up
to improved vision.
These fins are not like
normal fins. This picture on the
right is what a free diver uses.
As you can see there is only one
and both feet go into it. When
using normal fins, you have two
different ones and you put one
foot in each fin. The fins that
free divers use are very difficult
to swim normal in. When using
free diver fins you have to move
both legs at a time because the
place where your feet are go
into the same spot on the fin.
During free diving you need a
nose clip. When you go under water, the
water can go into your nose and cause a
weird feeling which you guys have
probably experienced before. However
when water gets in your nose is causes
you to have trouble holding your breath.
When using a nose clip nothing could get
into your nose especially water. This clip
is light and adjustable so in fits your nose
well. When free diving this nose clip is
very important.
Wet suits are very
important to free divers. Imagine
how cold it would get going down to
the bottom of the ocean in in pitch
black. It would be freezing. A wet
suit has many important features
that help free divers. One important
thing is that a wet suit helps
conduct heat using your body heat.
Also a wet suit has a low density
which allows it to have a little
buoyancy in the water which means
be able to float. Also a wet suit can
protect you from get scrapes or
cuts. A wet suit is a very important
part of free diving.
I found free diving a very interesting
topic to research. There were many interesting
parts about this project. During the research of
my project I learned a lot about free diving.
There were a lot of cool things to learn but also
some boring things. One thing I found really cool
to learn about was why people wanted to do free
diving. I found that interesting because free
diving is sport that you can die very easily. One
thing that I found not as interesting to research
was where was the best place to free dive
because the information was not very interesting
to learn or different unlike how people free dive.
I think I deserve a fully meeting expectations
because I think I did well in putting time and
effort in to it and also I think I has a good amount
of information. One thing I could of worked on is
my spelling and grammar in my information. I This
was a very fun project.

  • 3. What Is Free Diving? Why Do People Free Dive? Prove Themselves How People Do It Video Best Places to Free Dive Herbert Nitsch Fluid Goggles Flippers Nose Clip Wet Suit Spear Fishing Self Refle ction Bibliography Whole Presentation Exploring the Ocean in One Breath
  • 4. Free Diving is a sport where people swim as far as they can down to the bottom of the ocean or pool. This activity depends on the divers ability on holding their breath. These people go to the depths of the sea in just one single breath. People use free diving mainly for breaking records and exploring the ocean without any technology such as scuba tanks and gear. People also use it to spear fish. Free Diving is considered an extreme sport because you can die very easy.
  • 5. That’s a good question. Why would people want to dive down into pitch black water that is making you feel like and elephant is sitting on you and poking things into to your ears because of the pressure. Most people do free diving because that is how they can practice for other sports that involve holding your breath for a long time. To do this sport you have to be a risk taker. Some sports they practice for are Surfing, Swimming and a couple more. The main reason why people do free diving is because they want to break records and push to their limits. They do this to see what their body can do and how strong they are. Free Diving is a sport that seems really difficult. Personally I would not want to try free diving.
  • 6. That is one reason why people do free diving. That on reason is that they want to show people that nothing is impossible and you can do whatever you want. They show others that they can do things that so many people can’t do. They also prove their self's by showing what their own body can do. They push to limits and see how their body and brain reacts to it. You can’t learn that do normal sports like soccer and baseball. Humans want to know what they can do, they want to see if their body is made to do extreme sports. Many people probably could do well free diving but some just don’t try to push to their limits and try something extreme that other people don’t just do.
  • 7. People don’t just come up and dive as far as they can to try to beat the world, they have to practice. If people did that then they would for surely die trying. To start of people have to start of practicing is pools going short distances getting bigger once they feel they can move on. One main problem you need to practice for is the water pressure. The pressure is really hard on your ears when you go down deep into water. That is one thing you have probably noticed swimming a swimming pool. You might think that hurts your ears but free divers have to go a lot deeper than that.
  • 8. Another part of free diving is when you explore the bottom of the ocean. It’s similar to scuba diving but without a tank. You might think why do people just hold their breath instead of using a tank because they would have to come up to the surface so much you could barely see anything. Well if you can hold your breath like free divers can it is defiantly worth it. Free divers explore with out a tank because it allows them to go right up to animals without scaring them for example if you were a fish and a huge guy with air bubbles and mettle tanks on his back came up to you would you be scared. These people get to explore things that others can’t explore with a tank. Free divers can just swim up to sharks and sharks will think of them as just neighbors swimming around. If I could hold my breath like those people I would want to explore the sea.
  • 9. Another part of free diving is spear fishing. Spear fishing is going under water with a spear gun and trying to hit fish. This method is instead of fishing with a fishing rod. Normal spear fishing is with scuba diving equipment but this kind is pretty much just with your breath and a spear gun. When spear fishing in free diving style it would be a lot easier because you don’t look like a huge robot with a bunch of bubbles coming out from it. When doing this you are quiet and camouflaged. This is a good way to go spear fishing if you can hold your breath.

  • 12. You might think that all you need to free Dive is water, well that’s not true. The picture I showed you last on the slide is a good place to free dive because there is no currents except going up or down. If their were currents going sideways you could hit something and get injured which would not allow them to get back to the surface. In the middle of the ocean you could easily get lost and not be able to find the surface. Also sometimes when you are free diving you are allowed to use fins witch would make it even harder if there was a current because you could not push of the sides of the rocks or walls. Another reason people free dive at dean’s blue hole is because the side of the hole are just sand, which allows you to use the sides without injuring yourself and not being able to come to the surface. This blue hole is where most professional free divers go diving.
  • 13. Herbert Nitsch is currently the free diving world record holder and also the deepest man on earth. His record was set is 2007 going down 214 meters (702 feet) in the No Limit Discipline. Later in his life on June 6th, 2012 he passed his record going down to 253.2 meters which is 830.8 feet, but suffered from depression sickness after. Some amazing facts about Herbert Nitsch are that he can hold his breath for over nine minutes and has set 32 different world records. Herbert Nitsch is different from other good free divers because he is a self taught free diver which means no teacher ever taught him how to free dive. He is not only a free diver but is also a pilot for Australian Airlines. He also works to make advanced gear for free diving. Herbert Nitsch is a very talented person.
  • 14. One thing that would help free divers is something called the Fluid Goggles. These goggles were made by the world record free divers, Herbert Nitsch. These goggles are not mandatory to every free diver but they definitely would help. These goggles have a couple cool qualities. One thing about these goggles that there is a clear space underneath the lens that allows you to see over outside of the water. Another quality about the fluid goggles is that there is slow temperature change because of the fluid lenses. For each diver, these goggles are custom fit to your eyes and head so they fit perfectly. All this leads up to improved vision.
  • 15. These fins are not like normal fins. This picture on the right is what a free diver uses. As you can see there is only one and both feet go into it. When using normal fins, you have two different ones and you put one foot in each fin. The fins that free divers use are very difficult to swim normal in. When using free diver fins you have to move both legs at a time because the place where your feet are go into the same spot on the fin.
  • 16. During free diving you need a nose clip. When you go under water, the water can go into your nose and cause a weird feeling which you guys have probably experienced before. However when water gets in your nose is causes you to have trouble holding your breath. When using a nose clip nothing could get into your nose especially water. This clip is light and adjustable so in fits your nose well. When free diving this nose clip is very important.
  • 17. Wet suits are very important to free divers. Imagine how cold it would get going down to the bottom of the ocean in in pitch black. It would be freezing. A wet suit has many important features that help free divers. One important thing is that a wet suit helps conduct heat using your body heat. Also a wet suit has a low density which allows it to have a little buoyancy in the water which means be able to float. Also a wet suit can protect you from get scrapes or cuts. A wet suit is a very important part of free diving.

  • 19. I found free diving a very interesting topic to research. There were many interesting parts about this project. During the research of my project I learned a lot about free diving. There were a lot of cool things to learn but also some boring things. One thing I found really cool to learn about was why people wanted to do free diving. I found that interesting because free diving is sport that you can die very easily. One thing that I found not as interesting to research was where was the best place to free dive because the information was not very interesting to learn or different unlike how people free dive. I think I deserve a fully meeting expectations because I think I did well in putting time and effort in to it and also I think I has a good amount of information. One thing I could of worked on is my spelling and grammar in my information. I This was a very fun project.
