This document is a student paper on Dante Alighieri's work "La Vita Nuova" in Italian. It provides background on Dante and analyzes sections of the work, including Dante seeing his love Beatrice dressed in white for the first time which awakened his love for her. 2. INCIPIT VITA NOVA…
a new life begins…

3. Nine times already since my birth
had the heaven of light returned to
the selfsame point almost, when
first the glorious Lady of my mind
was made manifest to mine eyes;
even she who was called Beatrice
by many who knew not wherefore.

4. “She seemed not to be
the daughter of a
mortal man, but of
God.”

5. I say that, from that time forward,
Love quite governed my soul.

6. After the lapse of so many
days that nine years exactly
were completed…
…the same wonderful lady
appeared to me dressed all in
pure white.

7. To every heart which the sweet pain doth move,
And unto which these words may now be brought
For true interpretation and kind thought,
Be greeting in our Lord’s name, which is Love.

8. I felt a spirit of love begin to stir
Within my heart, long time unfelt till then;
And saw Love coming towards me, fair and fain.

9. Of those long hours wherein the stars, above,
Wake and keep watch, the third was almost nought,
When Love was shown me with such terrors fraught
As may not carelessly be spoken of.

10. Her most noble spirit departed
from among us in the first hour
of the ninth day of the month.

11. Stay now with me, and listen to my sighs,
Ye piteous hearts, as pity bids ye do.
Mark how they force their way out and press through;
If they be once pent up, the whole life dies.

12. There rose up in me on a certain
day, about the ninth hour, a
strong visible phantasy, wherein
I seemed to behold the most
gracious Beatrice.

13. These musings, and the sighs they bring from me,
Are grown at last so constant and so sore
That love swoons in my spirit with faint breath;
Hearing in those sad sounds continually
The most sweet name that my dead lady bore,
With many grievous words touching her death.

14. My spirit should go hence to
behold the glory of its lady: to
wit, of that blessed Beatrice who
now gazeth continually on His
countenance qui est per omnia
sæcula benedictus*.

ages.”
