Chapter 1.3
1. Chapter 1.3 Powers and Exponents McDougal Littell Middle School Math Course 1 Joseph Williams Melvin E. Sine Elementary [email_address] Objective : Find the value of powers.
2. Vocabulary Factor – p. 16 – when whole numbers other than zero are multiplied together, each number is a factor of the product . Power – p. 16 – an expression, such as 2 3 , that represents a product with a repeated factor. Base – p. 16 – the base of a power is the repeated factor (the number written large). Exponent – p. 16 – the exponent of a power is the number of times the factor is repeated (the number written up and small).
3. Powers, Bases, and Exponents The base of a power is the repeated factor and the exponent is the number of times a factor is repeated. 6 3 base exponent = 6 x 6 x 6 power There are 3 factors
5. Writing a Power Write the product as a power. 8 x 8 x 8 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 20 x 20 x 20
6. Reading Powers 3 2 is read “3 to the second power” or “3 squared .” 4 3 is read “4 to the third power” or “4 cubed .” 2 5 is read “2 to the fifth power.”
8. Finding the Value of a Power Write the power as a product. Then find the value. 11 2 = 11 x 11 = 121 5 4 = 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 625 7 squared = 7 x 7 = 49
