- This self-paced tutorial will introduce you to the concept of lifelong learning and the habits that will make you successful as a lifelong learner.
- What is learning? Learning is defined as acquiring a new skill or knowledge. For example: learning to ride a bike, learning a foreign language, learning to play a sport, learning to communicate better, learning a new technology.
- How do we learn? There are many ways in which people learn, for example: taking a class, reading a book or magazine, watching a movie, playing a game, socializing with other people. In summary, there are many ways in which people learn. Each person has his or her own unique learning style and preferences.
- You are probably already a lifelong learner. Here are some examples of activities that lifelong learners do: acting, speaking a new language, decorating, yoga, cooking, dancing, playing a musical instrument, puzzles, fishing, using a computer, and READING!!!!!
- So what is lifelong learning? Lifelong learning is the idea that it is never too soon nor too late for learning. It is a continuum of the learning process that takes place at all levels and in all formats - formal, non-formal and informal. Lifelong learning is the idea that learning can and does occur beyond the formal structure of an educational institution and occurs throughout one's lifetime. Lifelong learning is attitudinal--learners believe that one can and should be open to new ideas, decisions, skills, and behaviors. Lifelong learning sees that all citizens are provided with learning opportunities at all ages and in numerous contexts: at work, at home, and through leisure activities, not just through formal channels.
- In summary, successful lifelong learners believe: attitude is everything, I will..., I can..., I do..., learner 1st, it’s never too late (or too soon) to learn something, learning opportunities at all ages and in all contexts.
- Habit 1: Begin with the end in mind. Determine what your goal will be. Then you can develop a plan to achieve your goal. If your goal is to learn Spanish, do you want to learn Spanish well enough for basic communication or do you want to become fluent enough to have in-depth conversations in Spanish. Your goal will determine what you need to do to achieve that goal and how long it might take. But don't worry, if your needs or life circumstances change you can always modify your goal .
- Habit 2: Accept responsibility for your own learning. No one has as much invested in your learning as you. Think of your education (in all its forms) as an investment in your future. Value and take pride in your learning and accomplishments. How can you do this? Sign up for training or classes. Be an active participant by completing all your pre and post work and participating in discussions. Read a “how to” book. If you have a question, ask someone who can help you learn the answer.
- Habit 3: View problems as challenges. When a problem comes up, do you typically think of it as another crisis that must be dealt with or a challenge that you can learn from? These life events can provide powerful motivation and opportunities to learn. Think of how much you have learned during your life so far as a result of the curve balls life has thrown at you. Maybe you learned how to balance a checkbook, how to change a flat tire, or how to jump start a car. The most successful life-long learners view every obstacle as a learning opportunity.
- Habit 4: Have confidence in yourself as a competent, effective learner. Everyone has to start from somewhere. Even Tiger Woods had to learn the basics of golf. The words that you use to describe yourself will soon become your reality so be careful with your choice of words. Don’t say it or think it unless you want it to be true.
- Habit 5: Create your own learning toolbox. Ask any hobbyist or enthusiast and you will hear about a variety of items needed in his or her supply kit. There are kits for scrapbooking, golfing, computer repair, household repair, art, photography, etc. But did you know that most lifelong learners have their own toolkit too? While not a toolbox in the traditional sense, here are some of the tools that are useful to lifelong learners: books, technology, classes, mentors, friends, Web pages.
- Habit6: Use technology to your advantage. Technology is a tool that should be used to make your life easier. Use technology to help you in your learning. You can find tutorials on everything from how to tie a tie to how to build a fence on the Internet. MP3 players let you download your favorite music to exercise to or maybe you can even listen to an audio book that you would not normally have time to read.
- Habit 7: Teach/mentor others. The best way to learn something is to teach it to someone else. Not only is teaching and mentoring a good way to reinforce your learning but it is also a good way to give back to the community.
- Habit 7 ½: Play! Don’t let the number fool you. Habit 7 ½ is actually one of the most important habits. Successful lifelong learners know the value of play. Children spend lots of time playing because it is important for learning and brain development. It continues to be important for adults as well. So play, be curious, and read!
