Data-Driven Learning Activity: Locating academic words in a text
Purpose: to identify academic terms in a text
Outcomes: Vocabulary activity to identify academic words in a reading or student’s writing
Try it
1. Locate a digital copy of a reading or a writing text
2. Copy the text
3. Open Wordsift (https://wordsift.org)
4. Paste the copied text into the Text area of WordSift
5. Click on the SIFT button
6. A word cloud appears

7. Choose the Mark Words button
8. Change the option Academic Word List (AWL)
9. Words that are included in the Academic Word List appear blue
10. Click on a blue word in this word cloud (example: issue)
11.Use the Wordsift tools to make definitions for these words
