Selected Comments – Equity/Access<br /><ul><li>Which JCCS students will be able to participate? Very concerned that there will be inequity specifically involving incarcerated students.
In general, my students are not allowed to access the Internet.
I typically have 3 - 8 new students a day in my unit, so long-term computer based projects or curriculum (like PowerPoint or Plato) utilizing the computer cart is problematic..
Most of my students on I.S. do not have access to computers.
I find that many times my students have access to the web but it is usually on their cellphones or a computer which they do not have daily access.
Their levels of useable computer skills are quite limited. </li></li></ul><li>Selected Comments – Student Support<br /><ul><li>How soon will this happen?
There's a fraction of students who could do this. Many lack the self-discipline and require constant monitoring.
Preparing our students for online delivery of course content is critical to their educational process!
Education regarding the navigation of online curriculum is part of the skill set that all JCCS students should have the opportunity to be exposed to in their classroom experience.
I am questioned as to how we will fulfill the A-G requirements. </li></li></ul><li>Selected Comments – Teacher Support<br /><ul><li>How will teachers be trained? Would JCCS teachers continue to be supported by tech resource teachers?
One concern I have with online courses is the fact that direct instruction is not specifically done by the teacher and it could be a double edge sword (pros/cons) when a student is asked to process the information/content independently.
Is there a way to make parts of the Internet available to our incarcerated students while keeping other parts restricted?
My number one concern is being able to properly monitor students while they are working online.</li></li></ul><li>Selected Comments - Effectiveness<br /><ul><li>Research! Research! Research! Be selective about students and teachers chosen to take part in these programs.
We cannot close the achievement gap if our students of color do not have equal access to the internet and the technology to use it to its fullest.
If we do not pursue this avenue of education, we cannot claim to be preparing our students for the future. I am pleased and proud that JCCS is finally exploring this educational option.
I have students who are incarcerated and have completed their diploma requirements or passed the GED and would be excellent candidates to take on-line courses with community colleges. </li></li></ul><li>Selected Comments – Summary<br /><ul><li>I don't think this should be used for new credit because we don't want students just sitting at a computer and not interacting with others.
