  What’s the DEAL?
What is Design?

• Design   is a creative planning process.

• There   is no perfect design.

• Requirements     of a design are made up of
    criteria and constraints.

What is the Design Process?

• The   design process is a purposeful method of
    planning practical solutions to problems.

• The   design process is never final; there are
    always multiple solutions to a problem.

• The   design process is influenced by
    requirements called criteria and constraints.

• What   a design must include


Constraints
• Limitations   placed on a design

What’s the DEAL?

There are many different ways to describe the
design process.

The important thing to remember is that it is a
process. There is rarely a correct way to do
things and the first idea is never the best.

Using a process allows us to use a procedure to
solve problems and communicate ideas to
others.

What’s the DEAL?

 When you improve your design, you start at the
 beginning of the DEAL process with a new
 problem.

 Only under extreme circumstances will you start
 over completely. Modify and improve your design
 before scraping the idea completely.

 Communication occurs throughout the process.
 You will constantly communicate with your team
 to come up with the best possible design.

 1. People

 People are the most important resource.
 Without them, no products would exist.
 People’s needs and wants inspire other people to
 create products to fill those needs and wants.
 People create the designs, people produce the
 products, and people sell the products.

 2. Information

 • Information about similar products that are
   already being sold.
 • Information from potential customers about what
   they would like to buy.
 • Laws and regulations.
 • News about new materials and processes.
 • Drawings that tell how to make the product.
 • Work schedules.
 • Information given to the computers that control
   factory machines.

 3. Materials

 • Materials   are all the things used to make up a
   product.
 • All materials come either directly or indirectly
   from nature.
 • They are classified as either natural materials or
   synthetic materials.

 4. Time

 • Everything takes time.
 • Time influences how many products can be made
   and how many workers are needed to make
   them.
 • Time = Money

 5. Energy

 • Technology  systems use energy to change
   materials into products and to deliver those
   products to stores and customers.
 • Energy powers computers and other machines
   and brings light, heat and air conditioning to
   factory buildings.

 6. Capital

 • Capital
         includes the money, land, and equipment
   needed to produce the product.
 • Money is used to build factories, pay workers,
   and buy materials.

 7. Tools and Machines

 • Tools and machines are used to help change
   materials into a finished product.
 • They may include hand tools, portable power
   tools, and large machines and heavy equipment.
   The materials may change in shape, size, and
   internal structure.
 • They may also be combined with other materials.

There is rarely a correct way to do things and the first idea is never the best. Modify and improve your design before scraping the idea completely. Communication occurs throughout the process. Tools and Machines • Tools and machines are used to help change materials into a finished product. • They may include hand tools, portable power tools, and large machines and heavy equipment.
