3. THE SHAKESPEARE HOSPICE
• The Shakespeare Hospice serves a population of 145,000 across
South Warwickshire.
• Last year we cared for 229 patients and our total number of
beneficiaries is twice this if you include family and carers.
• We care for patients living with Cancer, Motor Neurone Disease,
AIDS and patients with life-limiting ilnesses through palliative day
Hospice, Hospice at Home, Family Support and our Information and
Support service.
• We have 210 volunteers helping us as drivers, in our patient area,
as complementary therapists, bereavement support, in fundraising,
in our shops and in information and support roles.
• We need to raise £1.4m this year and receive 2% statutory funding
compared with the average of 32% for an independent adult
hospice in England and Wales.

BACKGROUND STORY- 2003
• WCC needed to redevelop the site to meet current Health and
Safety requirements
• Vehicles were being driven into the skip loading area and there
was no overall traffic control
• The public had to climb metal steps to dispose of their waste
into the skips
• WCC had to meet EU and Government Waste Management and
Re-cycling targets as 80% of waste in Warwickshire was going
into landfill
• £.5 Million was spent redeveloping the site over a period of 15
weeks, including a steel framed building – 14 x 12 metres

• WCC approached 2 national charities who turned down the offer of
the use of this building
• TSH were then offered the site as a local charity.
• The facility was offered rent and rate free and in addition the
Council covered all heat and light costs
• A “Licence to Operate” was drawn up as the initial working
agreement
• In addition, initially assistance was provided by WCC Staff on site
to clear waste from the Shop
• TSH employed one full time manager and a team of volunteers
• Initial investment for TSH of £3000 in shelving and decoration
