[trailer] Mission Impossible 4 Analysis by Olufemi Coker
1. MI: ANALYSIS
This poster represents an action trailer as a technical colour red is used expressively to show danger,
blood, anger within the text. Sharp clear formal text is used to represent the importance of the action
film. Misc-en-scene has been excessively used - the bright spark shows the audience that this is an
indication of a bomb being set off as the dark wire shown is usually created with bombs to emphasize
the idea of a plot containing a crisis which needs to be solved. Similarly to the Inception Trailer poster
they both use the colour red to progress the indication of an action trailer.
2. MI: ANALYSIS
Genre: Action/Adventure because action trailers consist of a slow non-diegetic
background music becoming rapid as the shots progress, express fast cuts and
synchronise with the special effects, special visual effects and choreographed
fight scenes.
Narrative:
Equilibrium - The IMF shutting down
Disruption - The IMF has been infiltrated by the bombing of the Kremlin
Resolution - Ethan Hunt and his new team to clear the misunderstanding of the
planted bomb
3. MI: ANALYSIS
This is an extreme wide shot setting the scene which comes into the first 10 seconds of the
trailer. The special visual effect has represented the idea that this is an action film as it
comes really early in the trailer. Also, while the building comes crashing down, an entry of
non-diegetic rapid background music begins and straight cuts occur when Ethan runs away
from the scene. This is to emphasize the tension to the audience of getting away from the
collapsing building. This also makes the audience jump as the scene cuts from where Ethan
falls from the jump cuts occuring.
4. MI: ANALYSIS
This is an over the shoulder shot. This frame helps to maintain the position of each person
and to know the feeling of looking at one person from the other's point of view. As we can
see, Ethan is listening to his boss about the situation he's in. From my point of view, I think he
looks distressed about the situation as his body language exclaims he's not smiling. Ethan's
costume is casual with his make-up making him look rough. This represents a job for Ethan
much tougher than he's experienced because judging from his reaction to the Boss' debriefing
he doesn't seen pleased.
5. MI: ANALYSIS
This is an action sequence as fast cuts are used to
represent a series of artificial scenery such as
choreographed fights, synchronised non-diegetic music
referring to the action which is portrayed in this sequence.
