Foundations of Education Teaching is rocket science! Why is the teaching profession so complex? National Board Standards for accomplished teachers:      1. Teachers are committed to students and learning.      2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to      	teach those subjects to students.      3. Teachers are responsible for managing and  	monitoring student learning.      4. Teachers think systematically  about their practice  	and learn from experience.      5. Teachers are members of learning communities. Chapter 1

Foundations of Education Pedagogy Content Static content – knowledge of “what” you teach. --Elementary teachers are responsible for everything: >Reading – scientific inquiry< Dynamic content -  knowledge of “how” to teach.  --always changing --effectively teaching:  instruction, monitoring, adjusting --Piaget – child development, Bloom – thinking skills,    	Maslow – hierarchy of needs. Foundations of Education Pedagogy Professional Development -intended to improve one’s abilities as an educator. As Learners:  classes, workshops, trainings, renewing  		certifications As Mentors: helping other teachers, leading trainings,  		sharing successful strategies Chapter 1 As researchers:  learning what works
