KEY ECONOMIC, POLITICAL AND SOCIAL
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEW ENGLAND
COLONIES
ALL THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES/FOUNDING
New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island,
and Connecticut were all founded for different
reasons.
New Hampshire was founded by proprietors for
trading and fishing.
Massachusetts founded for religious freedom by
puritans and separatists.
Rhode Island founded by Roger Williams for
religious freedom.
Connecticut was founded by Thomas Hooker for
religious freedom.
ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEW
ENGLAND COLONIES
the New England Colonies consisted of
subsistence farming, shipbuilding industries,
cod industries, grain mills & saw mills, and
lots of trade. All of these economic
characteristics of the New England Colonies
are tied to mercantilism some how.

POLITICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEW
ENGLAND COLONIES
It was originally settled for money in
Jamestown, but as it grew people like Roger
William’s settled it for religious freedom and to
make money off of the economic
characteristics of the new England colonies.

SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEW ENGLAND
COLONIES
The New England Colonies were very, very
religious. The second colony to be settled
(Massachusetts, Plymouth) was settled for
religious freedom, and so were many
settlements after that. This is were the
thoughts of religious freedom and education
came about.
Separatists and
puritans
Religious
freedom
THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES GOVERNMENT
The separatists who settled Massachusetts wrote the
Mayflower compact-first written contract in the New
Colonies.
People in New England would all come together to vote at
the town hall, which was the center of their government.
This form of voting is an example of direct democracy.
The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut was the first
constitution that gave people voting rights.
Based on “City on a Hill”, Puritans worked hard to gain
respect from others as a group of people that thrive.
Puritans were brought down by the Salem Witch Trials. This
served as a lesson to many people to forgive others and not
to accuse people of being witches.
no more witches
The New England Colonies were the first English colonies in North
America, and are were the United States History had started.
