LAB PREP
 A marine mollusc
from the class
Cephalopoda
 Slender, pointed body
 Eight arms, two
tentacles
 There are over 300 species of squid
 Range from a few inches to over 100 feet
long
 Live in the oceans of North America and
Europe
 Eat fish, jellyfish, crabs and shellfish
 Move by sucking water in through the funnel
in their head (called the siphon) and shoot it
back out through the mantle
 They move backward
 Travel at about 20 mph
 Have 3 hearts, one pumps blood, two are for
gill functions
 Are hunted by sharks, sperm whales, other
sea creatures and humans
 Defend themselves by expelling ink
 They have an ink sac that contains the ink,
the ink sac is connected to the pen (which
also acts as a backbone-like structure), which
expels the ink
 1. Examine the outside of
the squid
 Locate the tentacles, head,
mantle and fins
 2. Locate the squid’s mouth.
 Describe where it is located, remove the beak
 3. Go through the mouth and grasp the brain
and the long nerve attached to it
 Carefully remove and examine it
 Describe what it looks like
 4. Turn the squid over and lay it flat
 Carefully cut through the mantle only
 Lay the mantle open
 Remove the silvery, black ink sac and put it
aside for later
 5. Using the squid diagram, locate the
siphon, liver, stomach and gills
 6. Locate the hard pen near the squid’s fin
end
 Grasp the pen and pull it out
 7. Gently pierce the ink sac with the pen
 Write your name using the ink on a paper
towel
 8. Make a small cut in the center of the eye
 Remove and examine the small, hard, round
lens
 9. Clean and wipe down your work area
