What is Multi-Tenant?
Multi-Tenant architecture is designed to achieve two specific goals:
• Improved performance along with ease of management and
• Consolidation.
Multi-tenant has two types of databases:
• Container Database (CDB) "Main" database contains up to 252
PDBs in 12.1 and 4096 PDBs in 12.2 and 18.1 (Oracle EE); or
exactly one PDB (Oracle SE)
• Pluggable Database (PDB) - "Application" databases containing
application/function-specific users and data

What is Multi-Tenant?
• Memory, space, and other resource requirements are greatly reduced with
Multi-Tenant. CDB and PDBs share: a single SGA, single set of database
processes, single database to patch and/or upgrade (CDB), single database
to backup (CDB), single configured container as standby database, and
single configuration for High-Availability, Data Guard, or RAC.
• What’s the Big Deal? Less memory and space are required. Before Oracle
12c: 30 database instances might require approximately 20 background
processes (each) to run; or, about 600 processes. With Oracle 12c 30 PDBs
will share 20 background processes (that's it).

Here’s a table of some of the automations already in place

Oracle 18c is really an extension of Oracle 12c
Oracle 12c introduced lots of new and updated features,
most notably:
– Oracle In-Memory Database
– Multi-tenant Architecture:
(first architecture change to Oracle since V6 in 1988!)
– Container Database (CDB)
– Pluggable Database(s) (PDB)

Oracle Exadata, and will be available as pay-as-you-go services on

Oracle Database 18c: New features for DBAs
You can create temporary tables with these characteristics:
– NAME must be prefixed by “ORA$PTT_” (or the current value of
PRIVATE_TEMP_TABLE_PREFIX initialization parameter)
– DATA is automatically deleted at the end of the transaction (just like
GLOBAL TEMPORARY TABLES created with ON COMMIT DELETE ROWS
clause)
– DEFINITION is automatically dropped at the end of the transaction (ON
COMMIT DELETE DEFINITION) or at the end of the session (ON COMMIT
PRESERVE DEFINITION)
This feature is useful for developers as well as DBAs, because it could reduce
the number of temporary or “test” tables created in the database.
1. PRIVATE TEMPORARY TABLES

A new command is introduced for DBAs to cancel blocking or too
expensive statements instead of kill the originating session.
Different syntaxes are available for RAC architectures (using INST#)
or when you know the specific SQL_ID:
ALTER SYSTEM CANCEL SQL ‘sid,serial#’;
ALTER SYSTEM CANCEL SQL ‘sid,serial#,sqlid’;
ALTER SYSTEM CANCEL SQL ‘sid,serial#,@inst#’;
ALTER SYSTEM CANCEL SQL ‘sid,serial#,@inst#,sqlid’;
2. SQL CANCELLING

In Oracle Database 18c the passwordfile default location is the Oracle
Base, while in previous versions was $ORACLE_HOME/dbs (for
Unix/Linux) or %ORACLE_HOME%database (for Windows).
The new location simplifies database migrations because Oracle Base
is common to every Oracle Home, so migrating a database from one
Oracle Home to another does not require moving any passwordfile.
3. PASSWORDFILE LOCATION

The preceding feature makes possible to mount one
shared read-only Oracle Home on different systems,
making deployment for complex architectures more
reliable and simpler.
4. READ-ONLY ORACLE HOMES

Oracle Database SW installation via ZIP files is now
possible, saving space previously needed for stage areas.
This method was already adopted for Oracle Grid
Infrastructure SW, and simplifies deployments on complex
environments, also making them faster.
5. SIMPLER INSTALLATIONS

For simple, standard Oracle Database installations
(single-instance, no Grid Infrastructure, …) and Linux
environment Oracle now deploy an RPM SW package.
This completely automates basic installations.
6. BASIC INSTALLATIONS

New ONLINE commands are now available for partitioned
tables:
ALTER TABLE… MERGE PARTITION… ONLINE;
ALTER TABLE… MERGE SUBPARTITION… ONLINE;
7. NEW ONLINE COMMANDS

Now it’s possible to completely modify partition strategy
(for example form RANGE to composite RANGE-HASH)
or partition a non-partitioned table using the ALTER
TABLE… MODIFY PARTITION command, also in ONLINE
mode.
8. PARTITION STRATEGY MODIFICATION

Oracle Grid Infrastructure now comes with pre-configured
default ORAchk daemon, ant ORAchk is automatically
executed at pre-defined interval after Oracle GI
installation.
9. ORACLE GRID INFRASTRUCTURE AND ORACHK

Oracle Database 18c comes with native integration with
MS Active Directory for database authentication and
authorization. Use of Oracle Internet Directory (via LDAP)
is still supported for the same purpose.
10. MS ACTIVE DIRECTORY INTEGRATION

One nice new feature of Oracle Database 18c is that schemas can be
created without a password. These are called “Schema Only
Accounts“. This new functionality is pretty simple and is a nice step
forward that can allow administrators to further secure their databases
and protect their applications.

ERROR:

11. ORACLE DATABASE 18C SCHEMA ONLY ACCOUNTS

Sharding is a data tier architecture in which data is horizontally
partitioned across independent databases.
Each database is hosted on
dedicated server with its own local
resources - CPU, memory, flash, or
disk. Each database in such
configuration is called a shard. All of
the shards together make up a
single logical database, which is
referred to as a sharded database
(SDB).

Oracle Database 19c: Changes in …
• Automatic indexing
The automatic indexing feature automates index management
tasks, such as creating, rebuilding, and dropping indexes in an
Oracle database based on changes in the application workload.
This feature improves database performance by managing indexes
automatically in an Oracle database.

• Ability to create a PDB by cloning a remote PDB
You can use the createFromRemotePDB parameter of the DBCA
command createPluggableDatabase to create a PDB by cloning a
remote PDB.
• Ability to relocate a PDB to another CDB
You can use the DBCA command relocatePDB to relocate a PDB
to another CDB.
• Ability to create a duplicate of an Oracle database
You can use the DBCA command createDuplicateDB to create a
duplicate of an Oracle database.

• New SQL script catpcat.sql for building the data
dictionary
After creating a database using CREATE DATABASE statement,
you can run catctl.pl with the new script catpcat.sql in place of
running the scripts catalog.sql and catproc.sql for building the
data dictionary. The script catpcat.sql runs the scripts catalog.sql
and catproc.sql with parallel processes, thus improving the
performance of building the data dictionary manually.

• Oracle Database Resource Manager automatically
enabled for Oracle Database In-Memory
The Resource Manager is automatically enabled when Oracle
Database In-Memory is enabled by setting the INMEMORY_SIZE
initialization parameter to a value greater than 0.

• Oracle Multimedia
Starting in Oracle Database 19c, Oracle Multimedia is desupported.
Oracle recommends that you store multimedia content in
SecureFiles LOBs, and use third party products for image
processing and conversion.
• Oracle Streams
Starting in Oracle Database 19c, the Oracle Streams feature is
desupported. Use Oracle GoldenGate to replace all replication
features of Oracle Streams.
Desupported Features

Starting in Oracle Database 19c, the SQL*Plus table
PRODUCT_USER_PROFILE (PUP table) is desupported.
The SQL*Plus product-level security feature is unavailable in
Oracle Database 19c. Oracle recommends that you protect data by
using Oracle Database settings, so that you ensure consistent
security across all client applications.
