Ancillary Texts Audience Feedback
1. We interviewed two people after they looked
at our ancillary texts (the CD Digipack and the
advertisement) to see what their feedback
was. The interview responses have been
transcribed in this presentation.
Interviewees have ranging ages, both M+I
are over 40, I ismale and M is female, and G
Ancillary Texts Audience Feedback
2. 1) What are your expectations of
the acoustic/folk music genre?
3. M: I think I’d expect it (a video) to be in that
beige effect (sepia), or maybe in black and
white. On the advert, I’d imagine there to be
a plain colour scheme.
I: I agree, I think a simplistic colour scheme
and layout on an advert.
What about a CD cover and pack?
G: I would say that, usually, something like
artwork, not necessarily their face, not
obvious.
M: Yeah, maybe something to do with an
instrument or them performing.
4. 2) Do our products conform to your
expectations?
5. M: Yes.
I: Yes, I think that the colour scheme is what
I’d thought would be part of an acoustic
genre or style.
M: Also, we said that an artist wouldn’t show
their face, it’s very abstract.
G: I think it’s similar to other ones of the
same style (of music), like maybe a bit
similar to other people in the charts.
7. M: It’s very strong.
I: The eye contact with the person that is
looking at it (the poster) is very engaging,
and it makes you feel like you’re being sort
of communicated with.
M: The colour of the image also works well
with the red text, it makes the information
stand out. Yeah, I like the image a lot.
8. 4) What do you think of the use of stills
from the music video on the lyric
sleeves?
9. I: I think it works well because it creates a
sort of link between the music video and the
CD.
M: Is the name of the album the same as the
song used for the video?
Yes, they’re both called ‘Make It Without
You’
M: Yes, so it creates a link between that too,
and it would make sense for the main track
to be the focus of the album.
10. 5)What are your opinions on the
text layout and font of the CD
digipack?
11. M: I think that the font layout is very
unusual, very creative.
G: I like how you’d only know what it
said if you looked a little closer, it draws
people in.
I: It does that without looking to
complicated, the blurred background
makes the text stand out, and its very
solid and prominent. I really like it.
G: Is the font here on the advert the
same as the CD? But a bit smaller?
12. 6) What aspects of the two ancillary
texts do you feel are professional, or
like real media texts?
13. I: The pictures are all good quality and look
professional.
G: Also, there’s the barcode and the
smallprint which is usually on real CDs.
M: The poster is set out in a way that looks
like professional tour posters, if that’s what
you were going for. The text is all organised
for it to be clear, and I like the little picture of
the album.
G: Me too, it creates another link. Also, I like
the ratings and the opinion quote, that looks
good.
14. 7) All in all, do the texts reflect the
genre correctly?
15. M: Definitely, you’ve got the piano pictures
for the covers to show the acoustic,
instrumental feel of the music.
I: There’s the artwork which is kind of typical,
what you’d assume from the genre, quite
arty and absract, like the pictures of the
outdoors and the church windows.
G: It’s all very arty and fits well with the
genre, I think it looks professional but also
unique, it’s not just a copy of what’s already
out there.
