Video: The Cultural Tradition of Child Marriages

http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/places/culture-places/beliefs-and-traditions/india_childmarriage/
Benefits of Later Marriage

● Further opportunity for education
● Improved health for mother, less likely to die in childbirth
● Infant Mortality Rates decrease as marriage age increases
● Planned families are healthier and more well-equipped to
   care for children
● Increased economic opportunities for mothers who received
   education prior to marriage/childbirth
● Lowers CBR, which is beneficial for dealing with
   overpopulation (especially good for India)
Child Marriage: A Rising Epidemic

:17-:57
Movement to End Child Marriage
Relation to Human Geo Concepts: Child Marriages

   ● Cultural traditions that make up the mindsets of
people are extremely difficult to change with simply
       outside forces

   ● Young girls getting married results in less education
and a lower status for women, which leads to a higher
CBR and more diseases like HIV/AIDS
Affirmative Action

● Castes deemed “backwards” qualify for special status
and guaranteed entry into schools or workforce.

● Lower classes take positions of more-prepared higher
caste members at universities and businesses.
● This is bad. Students are fighting to be considered a
lower class than they actually are.

Affirmative Action Wage Gap*

The top 10%
or the 12.3
ratio refers to
the "creamy
layer".

                      The bottom 10% or
                      the 1 ratio refers
                      to the
                      SC/ST/OBC's.
Proposed Solutions: Affirmative Action

● entry points

●

                 creamy backwards
● competition hard work
India: Population Overview
India: Population Under 15 years old
31% of the Indian pop. is under 15!

●

    ○ overcrowding
    ○ overpopulation
    ○ competition
    ○ gap
      impoverished
Helping India's Youth

● Youth = future

● child marriage = detrimental to the 31%
● affirmative action = detrimental to the rising 31%

Save India's youth from harmful practices and
discrimination save the future of India.
