  • 2. What Is A Question?
  • 3. Why Is Questioning Important? Sparks thought-provoking answers Engages students in productive discussions Allows students to think in different and unique ways
  • 5. Open-ended Questions- require students to defend their positions
  • 6. Closed Questions- limiting and allow for one or two students to answer either correctly or incorrectly
  • 7. Questioning Techniques  Elaborating Questions - help to extend and broaden the importance of the meaning  What are the implied or suggested meanings?  What does this mean to you?  How could you take the meaning farther?
  • 8.  Hypothetical Questions -help to explore possibilities and test theories. -“what would happen if…” questions  What if the earth had no sun?  What if the polar ice caps melted?
  • 9.  Clarification Questions -help to define words and concepts and clarify meaning  How did the character get to this point?  How did they gather the data?  Was it a reliable process?
  • 10. Socratic Questioning Technique  based on the practice of disciplined, thoughtful dialogue  Came from the philosopher Socrates  an effective way to explore ideas in depth  promote independent thinking in their students and give them ownership of what they are learning
  • 11. Tips for Using Socratic Questioning  Plan significant questions that provide meaning and direction to the dialogue  Follow up on students’ responses  Ask probing questions  Periodically summarize in writing key points that have been discussed
  • 12.  Draw as many students as possible into the discussion  Let students discover knowledge on their own through the probing questions the teacher poses
