development. River ecosystem of China is facing
unprecedented challenges.
Water has become a prominent bottleneck restricting the sustainable
development of economy and society.

The Pilot Area of River Ecosystem RestorationThe Pilot Area of River Ecosystem Restoration: Nanxi River basin,
located at the north bank of the lower reaches of Oujiang River,
Southeast Zhejiang Province, Eastern China.
The basin shape is like tree branches, the basin area is 2436 km2 and
the length of mainstream is 142 km.
The problems of ecosystem in this basin are representative.

6. Ayu is the rare fish species in Nanxi River, but population declined
seriously.

for flood control and water supply.

A more accurate and detailed ecological scheduling scheme will rely on
the further study on critical hydrological conditions for the habitats

10. ( 3 ) According to the swimming ability of Ayu, a fishway has been
built on the left side of the sluice in Naxi River.
Counts and classification at the fishway have not been
implemented, so the evaluation and optimization of fishway can
not be carried out.

11. 4 Activity Aims
to promote the exchange of experiences of river restoration between
Europe and China that have been implemented in Europe following
WFD driver. Good practices carried out in Rio Mondego, Rhine River
and Austrian experience and techniques will be transferred to protect
natural fish in Nanxi River basin.

experience
12. 5 The Tasks and Tentative Ideas
Legal and governance framework regarding watershed management.
Impacting and driving factors for water quality and biodiversity.
Task 1 : Collection of base information regarding Nanxi basin
Two workshop sessions will be done each year with local government
(organised by Chinese partners).
Task 2 : generation of policy recommendations
Development of monitoring plan and application of surveys methods
of WFD (including hydromorphology, macrophytes, water quality;
macro-invertebrates; fish, birds).
Open to other CEWP co-lead partners.
Task 3 : Training sessions for Chinese partners
13. Water Quality survey (Waters of Portugal); hydro morphology survey
(IBLB); fish survey( including fishway monitoring and to introduce
advanced monitoring technology); macroinvertebrates survey;
macrophytes survey and bird survey.
Task 4 : Identification of fish population constraints and habitat
preferences
Considering the pressures and key factors of natural fish population,
diversity and ecosystem services.
To pay attention to the extensibility of deliverable.
Through the cooperation study, not only research methods and
restoration measures will be put forward, but also a green
development model of water resources need to be established, which
can all be extended to other basins.
