1861 Southern Pacific Railroad began to build
a railroad that linked CA with the eastern
States. The transcontinental railroad was

Constitution
California became a state as part of the United States in 1850.
Second Constitution of 1879
-essentially the same political structure, but added institutions to regulate
railroads, public utilities (taxes). It is also one of the longest
Constitutions of the States.
-also prohibited the Chinese from owning land, voting or working for state or
local government within the document.
First capitol in San Jose, later moved to Sacramento in 1884

the Chinese after the railroad was done.
