Because a majority of Reagan County elementary students are classified as economically disadvantaged, the students are not exposed to the same opportunities and experiences of that of the other children their age.  One of the main goals of the CIP and those described in the SBDM committee are how to reach our students through the use of technology.  A lot of discussion has occurred on the topic of “virtual fieldtrips”.  Reagan County elementary principal Ty Stevens says “our students don’t get to go anywhere or do anything because their parents can’t afford it.”  By allowing our students to take part in online fieldtrips, we are capable of providing them with the necessary experiences they need to succeed in school.  Also, through the use of technology, we have ensured that our students are going to be engaged and interested in the content that we are teaching them.  Understanding that our students today are “in love with technology” is something that we as educators must realize and ensure that we incorporate in our instruction.  Providing our students with the “virtual fieldtrip” will guarantee that our students are provided with the opportunities that they are lacking in their “real” lives.
According to the STaR Chart from 2007-2008, Reagan County elementary is classified as advanced in all areas of measure.  Unfortunately, according the STaR Chart levels over the last three years, Reagan County is dropping in their numbered rankings.  As part of the SBDM committee, we have taken this into consideration when deciding what we need to do as a school district.  Believing that technology is not being used in all classrooms as it should be, more authority to ensure implementation on campus is needed.  Also, more training is needed to provide teachers with the confidence and knowledge necessary to provide these students with the technology opportunities required according to local, state, and national standards.
Professional development training over “virtual fieldtrips” must be provided to all educators.  Effective and appropriate training is necessary to allow our teachers to take advantage of the availability of our technology resources in the classroom.  All educators need to be knowledgeable and comfortable in teaching students this information, and understand that the benefits for these students are something that we cannot look past. Superintendent- Ensure that vision of school policies are being met, and insure that all policies are being met on each campus.   Campus Principal- Ensure all goals and policies are being followed on their campus.  Also in charge of funds for campus technology, professional development trainings, and needs of teachers and students are being met.  Principal must model and implement the goals of the technology plan to help ensure productivity.  It is the responsibility of the principal to ensure that all policies established through the CIP are implemented in the classrooms and on the entire campus.   Technology Director- In charge of successfully implementing the appropriate technology in the school system.   Teachers- Must implement technology into classroom instruction to enhance both instruction and learning.  Model the appropriate use of technology for the students. SBDM committee- Identifying the technological needs and goals of the campus.  Determine factors that can enhance technology use to improve on weak areas.   Technology team members-  Assist teachers with the implementation process of technology in their classrooms.  Provide the teachers with trainings on technology as needed. Includes professional development to improve decision making in the integration of technology with instructional and organizational leadership.TITLEDESCRIPTION OF TRAININGPURPOSE OF TRAININGDATE/PLACE/TIMEHow to reach Economically Disadvantaged Students Through “Virtual Fieldtrips.” This training will focus on providing teachers with training on resources that can be used in the classrooms to provide their students with virtual online fieldtrips.  Teachers will be split into groups of 2-3 teachers and provided with the websites and materials necessary for the “fieldtrip.”  Each group will experience opportunities that they had never had such as rocket simulation, or scuba diving.  Teachers will relate their experience to opportunities that our economically disadvantaged students might never have the opportunity to experience.  Through the virtual fieldtrips, the teachers will experience what seems like “real life” and actual “hands on” experiences.  After the field trips, assessment opportunity training will be provided.  Conversations and assessments over the “fieldtrip” will allow the teachers to understand how this training and use of technology can be incorporated into their classroom instruction.  Teachers will understand the advantage of using virtual fieldtrips in their classrooms, and see how much more engaged technology allows us to be in instruction.  Because of the majority of the students at Reagan County are classified as economically disadvantaged, they do not get to experience the opportunities that children their age normally do.  Technological advances have made it possible for these students to experience opportunities through online field trips that allow these students to experience things they might not have otherwise. Action Plan

  • 1.
  • 2. Because a majority of Reagan County elementary students are classified as economically disadvantaged, the students are not exposed to the same opportunities and experiences of that of the other children their age. One of the main goals of the CIP and those described in the SBDM committee are how to reach our students through the use of technology. A lot of discussion has occurred on the topic of “virtual fieldtrips”. Reagan County elementary principal Ty Stevens says “our students don’t get to go anywhere or do anything because their parents can’t afford it.” By allowing our students to take part in online fieldtrips, we are capable of providing them with the necessary experiences they need to succeed in school. Also, through the use of technology, we have ensured that our students are going to be engaged and interested in the content that we are teaching them. Understanding that our students today are “in love with technology” is something that we as educators must realize and ensure that we incorporate in our instruction. Providing our students with the “virtual fieldtrip” will guarantee that our students are provided with the opportunities that they are lacking in their “real” lives.
  • 3. According to the STaR Chart from 2007-2008, Reagan County elementary is classified as advanced in all areas of measure. Unfortunately, according the STaR Chart levels over the last three years, Reagan County is dropping in their numbered rankings. As part of the SBDM committee, we have taken this into consideration when deciding what we need to do as a school district. Believing that technology is not being used in all classrooms as it should be, more authority to ensure implementation on campus is needed. Also, more training is needed to provide teachers with the confidence and knowledge necessary to provide these students with the technology opportunities required according to local, state, and national standards.
