Editor's Notes

  1. Social media offers a plethora of opportunities for marketers to reach consumers and businesses, but it also offers job candidates a direct line of communication to corporations and hiring managers. Here are some tips for would-be new hires – both to stand out in the crowd and find the job opportunities leveraging social media:
  2. We’re going to talk today about some of the basic tools you can use and tips for getting your work out there and seen by prospective employers.
  3. First… what is social networking anyway? A social networking site is an online place where a user can create a profile and build a personal network that connects him or her to other users.
  4. http://smallbusinesscomputing.com/news/article.php/3828291/Social-Network-Marketing-Meets-Small-Business.htmNetworking is key to finding a job it today’s world. Traditionally that meant face-to face interactions– hanging out where people in your business hung out. Where you could be introduced to other people– friends of friends. Your cousin’s cousin is looking for someone. But today, you really have to stand out in a crowd. There a lot of candidates applying for fewer and fewer jobs. You really need to market your skills, and social media is a great way to do that. And, take it from someone who hires professional designers and web developers, I look at what people are doing on their social media spaces to help me make a decision on the most qualified candidates and who would be the best fit for my organization.
  5. When we’re talking about social media, what exactly are we talking about anyway– at least from an employers point of view?
  6. The social media landscape looks like this to many of us… social media includes EVERYTHING from picture uploading sites (Flickr), to blogging platforms, to social networks like facebook and myspace, to video space likes YouTube. And that’s just the beginning of it!
  7. Some of the leading social media sites for this month… according to nielsen research: Facebook and Myspace, blogger, twitter and tagged, which is a newer one to appear on this list. I update it for many various presentations. Tagged.com is a social network site for maintaining profiles and pictures, similar to facebook.
  8. The use of social networking sites has skyrocketed in recent years– in recreational use, but also in professional use.
  9. Just how are professional marketers using social media these days? Primarily to influence their brand reputation and increase brand awareness. … as well as make their business or product easier to find. Consider these aspects for yourself…. If you’re your own brand, you want people to be able to find you and know what you’re all about when you’re looking for a job. So, it makes sense that social media can help you accomplish this.
  10. So, what’s so different about social media anyway?
  11. First of all: social media are….. social: Participants have relationships to each other creating connections between people that may or may not know each otherWord of mouth is a key form of getting a job referral. It’s immediate: Immediate access to communication to anyone in your network. It’s free…or very inexpensive.
  12. link http://www.merchantcircle.com/corporate/press/2009-10-12.htmlA new online survey of US small business conducted by Internet2Go, an Opus Research advisory service, and MerchantCircle, the largest social network for small businesses has uncovered a new, growing segment of small business owners who aggressively use social media to promote their businesses. 22. Clean up your online image: Most hiring managers will Google a job candidate at some point in the hiring process – sometimes before an interview. Google yourself and find out what happens. Is your LinkedIn profile up to date? Has your personal blog been dormant for months? Do photos from a night of over indulging in Cancun come up in search results? Take a good inventory of how you appear online and prepare the groundwork. Make sure that content that a potential employer can access is appropriate. Use privacy settings whenever possible. Untag yourself in photos if you can’t remove them from the public eye. Ask people to recommend you on sites that allow reviews such as LinkedIn Build an online reputation: Create a LinkedIn profile, a Facebook page, join Twitter and any relevant professional networks or communities in your field. Even adding your name to a directory or commenting on a high profile blog can create new content for a prospect employer to find when searching for information on you. Show off your expertise: blog about what you know, have that portfolio and resume posted. Start discussions, share presentations, etc. Get involved in the conversation: join those online groups.Pay attention: set up rss feeds to job sites. Seek out an follow recruiters on twitter… Keep your content fresh and relevant. Show them what you can do… Take it offline: candidates are usually only hired after they’ve met the hiring manager in person. And, influencers still tend to recommend candidates that they know and have met directly. So, take your online relationships offline. Participate in networking events, organize a MeetUp, take a connection out to lunch and ask for informational interviews to get some face-time with potential employers.
  23. Have I repeated this enough times: Keep your personal profiles and professional profiles separate. If they aren’t and you’re looking for a job, separate them now! Don’t follow everyone professionally who you would personally. Remember, a potential employer can see their postings too. That means some friends aren’t doing you any favors.
  24. http://www.jumpstartsocialmedia.com/socialnetworkingtips.htmdon’t mention your job search– unless it’s known you’re looking. Don’t forget this is a public forum. Have I said it enough? You need to be professional and think before you post. Review your privacy settings– you can control on things like facebook who sees what about you. Those drunken cancun pictures are for your friends, not your future… or likely NOT to be future– boss. Don’t have a constantly negative attitudeAdd in those new contacts– keep your referral base growing… And keep your message about yourself and what you can do clear and focused.
