UMass Permaculture Initiative
Permaculture in the Pioneer Valley
 Who: The Pioneer Valley Community
   Students, Teachers, Parents, Staff, Custodians, Community
    Members, All Things Living
   12 students. 3 working groups. 3 Amherst Elementary Schools.
   Principal: Nick Yaffe    Head of Facilities: Ron Bohonowicz
 What: Permaculture Garden Design and Implementation
 Where: Where should this years installment be?
 When: Class ends in May. Then what?
 Why: To extend the UMass Permaculture Initiative to the
             greater Community.
 Ongoing process
 How to involve as much of the community as possible.
 Garden should be easily accessible for teachers to use
  for class.
 Facilities Maintenance concerns are snow removal,
  mowing, bees and hornets (from the apple trees that
  were planted last year), and are willing to help with
  installation but not maintenance.
 Long Term Sustainability
 Last year 2 apple trees were planted in from of the
    school.
   Teachers have voiced a need for a “safe route” to walk
    to kids to the garden.
   Behind the school is an open grass field that doesn’t
    drain well and is used as a recess play area
   The perimeter of the site has more sloping topography
   There are multiple spigots for water.
   Some pre-existing shade trees, but a need for more for
    summer programs.
