<ul><li>CONTEXT: Why to NEW YORK? </li></ul><ul><li>WW II threw Europe into chaos. </li></ul><ul><li>Many artists (incl. Leger, Mondrian) fled Europe to escape being drafted or persecuted and settled in America. </li></ul><ul><li>They favoured New York, which eclipsed Paris as the Art capital of the world during the 1940’s. </li></ul><ul><li>American artists and European immigrants worked together, and the cross-fertilisation of ideas produced innovative and often personally intense artworks. </li></ul><ul><li>De Kooning, Gorky, Rothko moved to </li></ul><ul><li>America from Holland, Armenia and </li></ul><ul><li>Russia respectively in 20’s/30’s. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Abstract Expressionism (1940-1955) </li></ul><ul><li>Now considered to be the first American artistic movement of international importance, the term was originally used to describe the work of Willem De Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky. Held prominence until the developent of Pop Art in the 1960’s. </li></ul>Photo includes artists: Gorky, Gottlieb, Hofmann, Kline, de Kooning, Krasner, Motherwell, Newman, Pollock, Reinhardt, Rothko, Still, Tworkov.
