David Melendez - Building a drone from scratch with spare parts is a challenging business. To accomplish this journey, a Linux embedded stability control system is developed entirely from 0.This is a journey starting from the hardware choosing (a home WIFI router), to a stable and real flight. Unconventional implementations are one of the main topic, like using WiFi as communication between drone and pilot, HTML5 and COMET to show telemetry from the router web server, and implementing a entirely new protocol based on 802.11 Beacon Frames to prevent deauthentication attacks.

The windowing capabilities offered by most stream processing engines are limited to aligned windows of a fixed duration. However, many real-world event processing use cases don’t fit this rigid structure, resulting in awkward processing pipelines. There haven’t been good alternatives, until recently that is. Apache Flink offers a rich Window API that supports implementing unaligned windows of varying duration. In this talk, Matt Zimmer will discuss using this API at Netflix to aggregate events into windows customized along varying definitions of a session. He will talk about implementation details such as: * Handling out-of-order events * Limiting state build-up while aggregating a subset of events from an event stream * Periodically emitting early results * Creating windows bounded by a type of event Attendees will leave this talk with practical techniques and knowledge to implement their own custom windows in Apache Flink.

Many stream processing applications can benefit from or need to rely on the prediction made with machine learning (ML) methods. In this presentation, new features of Apache Samoa are presented with a real data processing scenario. These features make Apache SAMOA fully accessible for Apache Flink users: (1) the data stream processed within Apache Flink is forwarded to Apache Samoa stream mining engine to perform predictions with stream-oriented ML models, (2) ML models evolve after every labelled instance and, at the same time, new predictions are sent back to Apache Flink. In both cases, Apache Kafka is used for data exchange. Hence, Apache Samoa is used as stream mining engine, provided with input data from, and sending predictions to Apache Flink. During the presentation, real life aspects are illustrated with code examples, such as input and prediction stream integration and monitoring latency of data processing and stream mining.

In this workshop we would like to take a closer look at the new features of Java 7 and Java 8. Java 7 has brought a couple of language enhancements to assist developers in their daily programming tasks and starting from Java 8 we finally have the opportunity to include a functional programming touch to Java thanks to Lambdas! Lambdas allow us to specify closures to create clean and brief solutions for which we would otherwise be obligated to write down a lot of boilerplate code. For example in order to sort a List of Strings based on their length we can now write the following code: Collections.sort(list, (s1, s2) -> s1.length() - s2.length()); Besides lambdas, Java 8 also comes with extension methods, allowing us to write interfaces containing implemented methods, streams and bulk data operations, granting us the opportunity to chain operations on collections to obtain a filtered or transformed set of the elements in our collection, and the possibility to pass functions as parameters. These features alone will have a major impact on the way how Java APIs can be written. There's also a brand new Date and Time API inspired on the popular JodaTime API and a couple of other language enhancements to aid Java developers in writing solutions in a more elegant way. Be sure to follow this workshop to stay up to date with the latest evolutions of the Java programming language. Java 8 is definitely an update of the programming language which you don't want to miss out on!

In this talk, we describe the design and implementation of the Python Streaming API support that has been submitted for inclusion in mainline Flink. Python is one of the most popular programming languages for data analysis. Its readability emphasizes development productivity and as a scripting language, it does not require a compilation nor complex development environment setup. Flink already has support for Python APIs for batch programming and unfortunately, the mechanism used to support batch programs (i.e., DataSet APIs) do does not work for Streaming API. We describe the limitations with the batch implementation and provide insights into how we solved this using Jython. We will walk through some of the examples programs using the new Python API and compare programmability and performance with the Java and Scala streaming APIs.

While dataflow engines offer scalability, their programming abstractions are often unfamiliar to data scientists, which are used to Python and R. To provide a more convenient interface, dataflow engines like Spark provide an R-like dataframe abstraction. While operations without user-defined code can be executed efficiently, the execution of UDFs is dominated by serialized data exchange between the dataflow engine and an external R process that evaluates the code. We present a new approach to execute user-defined functions by using the Truffle/Graal compiler infrastructure, which enables efficient execution of dynamic languages on the JVM. Based on fastR, the R language provided by this infrastructure, we exemplify the execution of R scripts directly inside the data pipelines of Flink, without data serialization and inter-process communication. Furthermore, we discuss future opportunities and problems, and compare our approach to native Flink, Spark, and SparkR.

One of the most underrated features of Kubernetes is namespaces. In the market, instead of using this feature, people are still stuck with having different clusters for their environments. This talk will try to break this approach, and will introduce how we end up using ephemeral namespaces within our CI/CD pipeline. It will cover the architecture of our system for running the user acceptance tests on isolated ephemeral namespaces with every bits and pieces running within pods. While doing this, we will set up our CI/CD pipeline on top of TravisCI, GoCD, and Selenium that is controlled by Nightwatch.js. Sched Link: http://sched.co/6Bcb

Last year we (TouK) introduced Flink in one of the biggest polish telcoms in the domain of real time marketing and fraud detection. One of the most significant problems in adoption was lack of programming skills at our client - the users were supposed to be analytics/business people. Therefore, we developed a custom platform - TouK Nussknacker - which allows users to design processes with GUI by drawing diagrams. Our project is going to be open-sourced soon - this will happen before Flink Forward. We believe it can make stream processing with Flink more accessible in many use cases, especially in companies that don't have their own development teams. During the talk I’m going to describe architecture of our platform, why we made certain design decisions and about our future plans. I’ll also describe our experiences - when being able to use GUI is great and when it’s better to develop jobs as normal code. If time permits I’ll also show a quick demo of our solution.

Beam evolved from a decade of system-building at Google, and Beam pipelines run today on both open source (Apache Flink, Apache Spark) and proprietary (Google Cloud Dataflow) runners. This talk will focus on I/O and connectors in Apache Beam, specifically its APIs for efficient, parallel, adaptive I/O. Google will discuss how these APIs enable a Beam data processing pipeline runner to dynamically rebalance work at runtime, to work around stragglers, and to automatically scale up and down cluster size as a job’s workload changes. Together these APIs and techniques enable Apache Beam runners to efficiently use computing resources without compromising on performance or correctness. Practical examples and a demonstration of Beam will be included.

Kube-proxy enables access to Kubernetes services (virtual IPs backed by pods) by configuring client-side load-balancing on nodes. The first implementation relied on a userspace proxy which was not very performant. The second implementation used iptables and is still the one used in most Kubernetes clusters. Recently, the community introduced an alternative based on IPVS. This talk will start with a description of the different modes and how they work. It will then focus on the IPVS implementation, the improvements it brings, the issues we encountered and how we fixed them as well as the remaining challenges and how they could be addressed. Finally, the talk will present alternative solutions based on eBPF such as Cilium.

Over the years at Yelp, we have relied on Kafka to build many complex applications and stream processing data-pipelines that solve a multitude of use cases, including powering our product experimentation workflow, search indexing, asynchronous task processing and more. Today, Kafka is at the core of our infrastructure. These applications use different versions of Kafka clients and different programming languages. To fulfill the requirements of these diverse use cases, we run several specialized Kafka clusters for high-availability, consistency, exactly-once and infinite retention. We endeavor to keep our clusters up-to-date with newer Kafka versions that bring with them several critical bug fixes and exciting features like dynamic broker configuration, exactly-once semantics, kafka offset management and improved tooling. Our journey with Kafka started with version 0.8.2.0. Upgrading Kafka while ensuring client compatibility, zero-downtime, negligible performance degradation across our ever-growing multi-regional cluster deployment exposed us to a plethora of unique challenges. This session will focus on the challenges we encountered and how we evolved our infrastructure tooling and upgrade strategy to overcome them. I will be talking about: -- How we rolled out new features such as kafka offset storage, message timestamp, reassignment auto-throttling, etc. -- Core technical issues discovered during upgrades such as failure of log cleaners due to large offsets while upgrading. -- The in-house test-suite that we built in order to: validate new kafka versions against our existing tooling and client-libraries, exercise the upgrade and rollback process and benchmark performance. -- The automation we built for safe and fast rolling upgrades and broker configuration deployment.

The goal of Continuous Delivery is, briefly, to get features into your users' or customers' hands as quickly and confidently as possible. In order to succeed, Development and Operations teams need to align and come up with both working and deployable software in short, regular intervals. Chef, Puppet, Ansible & Co. enable teams to code up application runtime environments, but alone do not allow for building quality into their processes. In this presentation I will show how you can apply the "Red, Green, Refactor Cycle" of Test-Driven Development and combine it with your configuration management or orchestration tool of choice in order to come up with better infrastructure that can automatically be tested using Puppet, Test Kitchen, Docker, Serverspec and RSpec.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.
