Join Sean Cohen and Steve Gordon to review notable features of this new OpenStack release, including: Network quality of service (QoS) support via a new extensible API for dynamically defining per-port and per-network QoS policies. Mark host down API enhancement in support of external high-availability solutions, including pacemaker, providing resilient instances in the event of compute node failure. Enhanced Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) support including dashboard integration, Ipsilon, and OpenID Connect support. Role-based access control (RBAC) for networks, providing fine-grained permissions for sharing networks between tenants. Dashboard support for database-as-a-service (Trove), subnet allocation, floating IP assignment, and volume migration. Generic volume migration—adding the ability to migrate workloads from iSCSI to non-iSCSI back ends. New Cinder replication API to allow block level replication between back ends. Nondisruptive backup to allow backup while the volume is still attached, by performing backup from a temporary attached snapshot. New Image signing and encryption to guarantee integrity by supporting signing and signature validation of bootable images. In addition we’ll discuss the state of emerging projects including Manila and Zaqar.

What's new in OpenStack Liberty

OpenNebula’s quest for simplicity touches every aspect of the software,and one of the greater effort has been put into the provisioning model. A smooth experience for users entails a proper design of the concepts, ironing out the flow of day to day operations, as well as proper tools for the administrators to manage its cloud. For this reason, OpenNebula features Virtual Datacenters (vDCs), which are containers for the execution of virtual machines, as well as a way of hiding physical resources from group members. Three actors are identified in this model: the cloud administrator, the vDC administrator and the end user. In this talk we will see how this vDCs are created, how physical resources are associated to them and administrators of the vDCs are managed and given permissions. All this topped with an excellent interface, the Cloud View, adapted for each of the actors.

The platform currently runs several solutions for Earth Sciences Researchers: Developer Cloud Sandboxes for scalable scientific processors integration, Virtual Archives federating distributed data repositories, Data Challenges for Earth Observation contests, and Digital Marketplaces for reproducible scientific experiments. OpenNebula is also powering our Cloud development environment, that has been enhanced during the past year. Terradue’s Cloud development environment is both our laboratory to test the latest developments from OpenNebula, especially for the integration of our own OpenNebula extensions, and our Engineering team facility to provision servers supporting project-based software developments. OpenNebula provides the virtualization and management of hardware clusters, that we rent from commercial ‘bare-metal’ providers. We have recently further developed several specific drivers for Multi-Cloud bursting, in order to provision virtual machines over public commercial clouds. When their processor integration and validation phase concludes, our researcher users can seamlessly burst their applications at scale, leveraging OpenNebula drivers for on-demand processing tasks.

Abstract OpenStack and OpenContrail network virtualization solution form a complete suite able to successfully handle orchestration of resources and services of a contemporary cloud installations. These projects, however, have been only available for Linux hosted platforms by now. This talk is about a work underway that brings them into the FreeBSD world. It explains in greater details an architecture of an OpenStack system and shows how support for the FreeBSD bhyve hypervisor was brought up using the libvirt library. Details of the OpenContrail network virtualization solution is also provided, with special emphasis on the lower level system entities like a vRouter kernel module, which required most of the work while developing the FreeBSD version. Speaker bio Michal Dubiel, M.Sc. Eng., born 17th of September 1983 in Kraków, Poland. He graduated in 2009 from the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Electronics of AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków. Throughout his career he worked for ACK Cyfronet AGH on hardware-accelerated data mining systems and later for Motorola Electronics on DSP software for LTE base stations. Currently he is working for Semihalf on various software projects ranging from low level kernel development to Software Defined Networking systems. He is mainly interested in the computer science, especially the operating systems, programming languages, networks, and digital signal processing.
