 Should I use the gerund (ing form of the verb)
or should I use the infinitive (to infinitive) ?
 Which form to use for the second verb in a
sentence?
 e.g.
◦ Stop doing something not stop to do something.
 The form of the verb which is used after the main
verb
 I want to go to school (infinitive)
 I must go to school (bare infinitive)
 I like going to school (gerund)
◦ Στο αυτή του non-native speaker όλα ακούγονται σωστά!

 Το πιο κοινή μορφή του απαρέμφατο.
 Όταν το 2ο ρήμα εκφράζει σκοπό
◦ I must go to the supermarket to buy milk.
 After certain verbs
◦ Want to do, would like to do, need to do, decide to
do, can’t afford to do, it’s time to do
◦ Decide, know, ask, describe + question words:
He asked us what to do.
◦ too/enough + to do
◦ Would + prefer/enjoy/love/detest –εκφράζει
συγκεκριμένη προτίμηση.
E.g. I would love to swim on Saturday.
 Στην σύγκριση το δεύτερο to μπορεί να
παραβλεφθεί
◦ I would like to go home than (to) stay here
 Μετά από κάποια ρήματα που ακολουθούνται από
αντικείμενα: believe, consider, know, find
I consider you to be rude.
 Μετά από κάποιες προτάσεις που ξεκινούν με To:
◦ To be honest, To tell you the truth, To cut a long story
short…
 explained how + to, hope + to, offered + to, afford
+ to
 encourage + to, enough + to, too +to, remind + to
 Να μετατρέψεις ρήματα σε Υποκείμενο ή
Αντικείμενο
 prefer/enjoy/like/love/hate/..+ ing αλλά
would prefer, would like + to inf. ….
 must/can/may/should/mustn’t + bare
 I can’t stand + ing, It’s no use +ing,
There’s no point in +ing, I don’t fancy +ing
 avoid + ing, suggest + ing
 go, went + ing, stop +ing (e.g. stop eating)
 After modal verbs
◦ Must, can, will, should, may, might
◦ Had better, would rather
◦ Let, make, see, hear, feel, watch
 Μετά από had better/ would rather + bare(σκέτο)
 He does nothing but complain
 Why pay so much

Infinitive or Gerund: Απαρέμφατο στα Αγγλικά.

  • 2.  Should I use the gerund (ing form of the verb) or should I use the infinitive (to infinitive) ?  Which form to use for the second verb in a sentence?  e.g. ◦ Stop doing something not stop to do something.
  • 3.  The form of the verb which is used after the main verb  I want to go to school (infinitive)  I must go to school (bare infinitive)  I like going to school (gerund) ◦ Στο αυτή του non-native speaker όλα ακούγονται σωστά! 
  • 4.  Το πιο κοινή μορφή του απαρέμφατο.  Όταν το 2ο ρήμα εκφράζει σκοπό ◦ I must go to the supermarket to buy milk.  After certain verbs ◦ Want to do, would like to do, need to do, decide to do, can’t afford to do, it’s time to do ◦ Decide, know, ask, describe + question words: He asked us what to do. ◦ too/enough + to do ◦ Would + prefer/enjoy/love/detest –εκφράζει συγκεκριμένη προτίμηση. E.g. I would love to swim on Saturday.
  • 5.  Στην σύγκριση το δεύτερο to μπορεί να παραβλεφθεί ◦ I would like to go home than (to) stay here  Μετά από κάποια ρήματα που ακολουθούνται από αντικείμενα: believe, consider, know, find I consider you to be rude.  Μετά από κάποιες προτάσεις που ξεκινούν με To: ◦ To be honest, To tell you the truth, To cut a long story short…  explained how + to, hope + to, offered + to, afford + to  encourage + to, enough + to, too +to, remind + to
  • 6.  Να μετατρέψεις ρήματα σε Υποκείμενο ή Αντικείμενο  prefer/enjoy/like/love/hate/..+ ing αλλά would prefer, would like + to inf. ….  must/can/may/should/mustn’t + bare
  • 7.  I can’t stand + ing, It’s no use +ing, There’s no point in +ing, I don’t fancy +ing  avoid + ing, suggest + ing  go, went + ing, stop +ing (e.g. stop eating)
  • 8.  After modal verbs ◦ Must, can, will, should, may, might ◦ Had better, would rather ◦ Let, make, see, hear, feel, watch  Μετά από had better/ would rather + bare(σκέτο)  He does nothing but complain  Why pay so much
