Micro Credit…Banking for the poor
The idea of micro credit first bore fruit when Nobel Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus established the
Grameen Bank in Bangladesh in 1983; fueled by the belief that credit is a fundamental human right. His objective was
to help poor people escape from poverty by providing loans on terms suitable to them and by teaching them a few
sound financial principles so they could help themselves.
From Dr. Yunus' personal loan of small amounts of money to destitute basketweavers in Bangladesh in the mid-70s,
the Grameen Bank has advanced to the forefront of a burgeoning world movement toward eradicating poverty
through microlending. Replicas of the Grameen Bank model operate in more than 100 countries worldwide.
Micro Credit Cambodia
MIO Plc. opened its doors in August 2015 in Siem Reap Cambodia. The company was created by Miss Mihoko
Onozawa, a Japanese national, and her Cambodian partner Chan Dara. MIO Plc now delivers financial services at
affordable costs to sections of disadvantaged and low-income segments of Cambodian society, who would normally
be considered non bankable. Loans as small as $250 USD can make a tremendous difference to poor workers. These
small sums of money would be too insignificant to process by a commercial bank but has made the difference between
virtual wage slavery and financial independence for many poor Cambodians. The overall goal of MIO is to eliminate
poverty in Cambodia by extending financial services and addressing the constraints that exclude people from full
participation in the financial sector.
